Not sure how this turned into Southern writers...open to all writers! I'm making my list now. I've heard The Nanny Diaries is good, but keep these suggestions coming, I've got lots of space in my carry-on!

Mine would be anything by,
John Grisham
Michael Chrichton
Edna Buchanan
I enjoyed Stupid White Men by Michael Moore and Longitudes and Latitudes by Thomas Friedman of the NYTimes.

I thought that Nanny Diaries was by turns appalling, shocking, outrageous, and hilarious. Definitely worth a read--anybody familiar with NYC's "keeping up with the Joneses" attitude will smile knowingly.

Another vote for the Nanny Diaries and if you're a working mom, Alison Pearson's "I Don't Know How She Does It", offers humorous comfort, made my life seem alot calmer. Of course any book my Anne Tyler is enjoyable and prett funny.

I just finished Dave Barry's, "Tricky Business." Quick read. I like Hiiasen and Shames also. I just started, "King of Torts" by Grisham. So far I like it.

Bennie-I've read "Rachael's Holiday" and "Watermelon" both. The only books by Keyes that I haven't read are "Angels" (just coming to ppbk) and "Sushi for Beginners" which I don't know if it was released in US. I really loved Rachael's Holiday, Watermelon was good, but probably my least fave.

I just got done w/ "Good in Bed" by Jennifer Weiner. I LOVED it!! I actually read it in one sitting, that's how into it I got. I highly recommend it, like Keyes' style. Humorous but definately not all fluff. Tackles some serious family issues.

Re-reading "A Girl's Guide to Hunting and FIshing" by Melissa Bank right now. ANother good one. And a quick read.

Cassidy - Angels was really good. The "good" sister goes to Hollywood and goes "bad". Very funny. Haven't heard of Sushi for Beginners. Will have to wait for it to be released here or ask my brother to send it over.

Though I read "chick lit", its really not my favorite genre. Sometimes its the only thing appealing in the airport bookstands. I like Marian more for her take on the Irish than anything. Same reason why I like Maeve Binchy - all her stories sound like stories my Dublin raised mother used to tell me. Even the character names are the names of all my relatives.

If you like stories of the Irish, try the trilogy of books by Brendan O'Caroll. (The Mammy, The Chislers and The Granny). So funny and so realistic without being overly maudlin (like Angela's Ashes).

Mary McGreevy was another excellent read.

I love Pat Conroy as well. Totally agree that the novel "Prince of Tides" is MUCH MUCH better than the movie.
Confederacy of Dunces is another favorite. Philip Seymour Hoffman is slated to play Ignatius in the movie. This movie has been kicking around for YEARS, originally John Belushi was going to play Ignatius. Should be interesting, hope they don't destroy it.
Another great summer read is "The Beach." Came out a few years ago so perhaps everyone has read it . . . the movie (with Leo DiCaprio) was nowhere near as good as the book. It's a great book to read while traveling.

Kate Charles writes good English mysteries with a contemporary setting.
