Enormous Airfare Fluctuations

I just wanted to let everyone know to shop around carefully for airfare. I watched a round trip from Orlando to Phoenix go from $217 to $227 to $257 to $317 back to $217 in just THREE days! Luckily I was able to get the lowest fare, but how about those poor people who paid $317?

I was watching as my airfare from SFO to Atlanta went from $244 to $284. I got scared they were going to keep going up like the gas prices so I bought our tickets for our May flight and then a week later it went down to $218. YIKES!

I contacted Delta and got both my DH and myself $66 vouchers for my next Delta trip...which will probably be in the fall. The prices are again back up to $284. It pays to watch even after you buy your tickets!!!!

I had shopped around on Orbitz, and a few other places and the best price was right on the Delta site! GO FIGURE!

Dear utahtea
By just mentioning the fluctuation in prices from what you had paid you got the vouchers? We're flying on Delta to Germany and the same thing happened to me--watching prices go up and buying, then to see them drop.

To MzPossum,

I had read on another board where someone had received vouchers from Delta when there fare when down, so when I saw our fare had gone down, I went looking for an answer on the Delta Web Site and I found I was egilible for the vouchers. Here's the link:

http://www.delta.com/care/faq/travel...#refund_adjust

I called Delta and they e-mailed me the vouchers while I was still on the phone.

I don't know if it makes any difference or not but I purchased the tickets on-line from Delta.

Usually companies have a special feature that sends you the best deals going on at that time. I know Orbitz always sends me these Deal Detector notices. That's what I usually go off of when booking flights. They are the cheapest prices they have.

I was looking at an airfare from RDU to Denver priced at $240. I was hoping for a sale, but the price went up to $308. Ouch. I looked around and found a non-stop on a different airline for $230 and bought it right away. Now the original airline's price is $377. And I though $240 was expensive, ouch.

Last year I was looking for airfare and the price was around $300. I thought I could do better and it went down to $198 for two days. Since I was looking for a sale, i lucked out.

I'm sure the airlines are trying to think up more ways to raise the price (gas surcharge anyone). How about a new motto for the airlines: Our CEO made $4.3 billion last year in compensation and perks yet our company is in bankruptcy.

I don't have a lot of faith in Orbitz pricing. While shopping for a last minute fare for my son, they showed Air Canada at $370 for roundtrip Chicago to Frankfurt. When I tried to buy ANY of the five options, the message came back that the flight was unavailable. Yet, that same fare for those days/destinations continued to be adver-tized on Orbitz as though they were available for four more days! I think its bait and switch.

I'm suprised that happened to you. Orbitz has always worked out fine for me. Sometimes I even get cheaper deals than what i go for I would still consider trying Orbitz every time though. You never know what you will get!
