Encinitas rental villas/cottages
I am into planning mode for a trip to the San Diego area next year. We have looked at rental villas with pools/ cottages near the beach in and around San Diego and they seem pretty expensive. We are thinking of moving our base north a bit to the Encinitas area. Is this a good spot for a base to get to San Diego and the surrounding area? Does anyone have any particular knowledge of rental properties in that area? There are just 2 of us so we don't need anything big. We would like a private pool, or if it's within walking distance of the beach we'll be happy using the sea as our private pool! We are planning to be there from mid March to early April - 3 weeks in all. Thanks in advance for your knowledge.

Encinitas can be a lovely area. If you stay near the beach, it has a old town, funky beach town vibe. Nice restaurants and a laid back feel. Further inland, it is suburbia. I lived there many years back and loved it.
My only concern for you would be that it can be a bit of a drive to/from downtown San Diego, depending on the time of day. Its about a half an hour from downtown, if there is no traffic. But if you are trying to get from downtown to Encinitas during rush hour, it would be much worse. If your activities for the day are south, you would want to plan around rush hour traffic.
On the other hand, its a great spot if you intend to spend any time in Orange County or LA or the desert. Of course, being California, you will always have to plan around traffic on the freeway.
Good luck and have a great trip.

Thanks Egnolive - that really helps in confirming our focus on Encinitas. I also appreciate the feedback about the drive to San Diego - as we will be on holiday we will have the luxury of planning our time to avoid the rush hour but it's good to know in advance!
We plan to get over to Palm Springs for the Dinah Shore classic, play some golf over there and around Encinitas, take a whale watching trip from San Diego and generally relax and enjoy. I'm looking forward to it already!
Best wishes

We really enjoyed our stay at Sea Bluff. If you are still looking for a place I would recommend you check it out.
If you are interested in more details let me know and I will provide a more in depth review.
