Jannik, click Hotels above, then click New York City, then click D-whatever to get E for Empire. Then click user rating & read the reviews. This place gets pretty awful feedback. The only thing it has going for it is location.

You can also go to tripadvisor.com for reviews of NYC hotels. They rank them in order of popularity.

Here's a direct link to the Empire:

Message: My parents and I stayed there 20 years ago during a NYC weekend getaway, and I remember the rooms being pretty basic, but hardly awful. Its recent reviews kept me from booking a room there for my wife's and my trip to NYC in July (we booked a room at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers instead), but it was a toss-up because the Empire's location is excellent--right next to Lincoln Center, a block or two from Central Park, etc. Just ask yourself how much time will you be spending in your room during your waking hours.

Check the Fodors recommendations, as advised above. The best mid level hotel in midtown west is the Lucerne (ask for a corner room). For NY, the room was large and well maintained. The breadfast was great. The service and location are great and right in the residential areas yet close to Central Park and the subways. We stayed earlier in the month and loved it.

Hotel is lovely and the location is fantastic. Twenty paces from Lincoln Center. Some of the best restaurants in the city are in this neighbor, easy walking areas. Quick & easy to get on a bus or subway and go uptown, downtown, crosstown. Great shopping.

Truthfully, how much time will you spend in the room?

The Empire is nasty. So is the Mayflower (near by). However, I believe I heard that it was recently sold. Maybe they'll gut it. A new hotel near Lincoln Center would be good. Stay at The Gorham instead. Call there for best rate.
