ttt.

This is an idea so many of us here in NJ had feeling far away & helpless with so many in need. I'm glad to see there's a way to connect & offer shelter to families in need if we are able.

Since I am not in a position to offer a place to stay, I have used the site listed to locate someone offering help in my town and emailed them with an offer to find clothes, provide food and other essentials to ease the burden of this generous person.

I have emailed the regional office of my church - I have suggested that they contact each local church and see how many families each church can "sponsor" - that means transport, house, assist with employment and access to local services and education and hopefully eventually assist with relocation back to Gulf States. So if indiviuals can not offer a room or apartment, local church or club members could chip in towards cost of housing expenses.

My vision is that every national office of every religious and civic organization contact their local units and ask how many families each local unit could sponsor in a similar way - and that some national entitiy (Red Cross, FEMA, etc.) could facilitate a "match" with families wishing to relocate.

Something tells me that the Astrodome is not a long-term solution.

Thank heavens, my home state, Minnesota is stepping up to the plate.

It has been announced that we are welcoming 5000 displaced victims of Katrina, if you are in MN and want to volunteer in ANY capacity as I am, you may call (per the press release):

The hot line numbers are (651) 297-1304 in the Twin Cities area and 1-800-657-3504 in the non-metro area. For the hearing impaired, the TTY number is 1-800-657-3822.

It has been reported that these numbers are also available to those who may be trying to reach loved ones.

They have all my info to begin volunteering as soon as I am needed, how great would it be to meet a fellow Minnesotan Fodorite while volunteering!

Hi Tiff, you may find that there is an opportunity for Sophie to help as well. I understand that some of the folks coming to NC will be bringing their pets, but the temporary housing doesn't allow them in some cases. Pet foster care may be needed in MN as it apparently will be in NC.

Oh that is fantastic Cmcfong, I will also look into that opportunity, thanks!

(Sophie just looked up from my lap and her most needed nap to tell me she is honored that you remember her, she sends her best to your babies and wonders if they went for their walk with you yet this weekend?!?)

Sidenote: Years ago, when I used to live in Cali, I used to take my little one Sebastian to my local nursing home to "visit". You could not believe how people's faces would brighten up immediately when they saw him. It warmed our hearts. I guess I should be typing this on the pet thread, but oh well, there you are.
