Embassy Suites/LaJolla
Has anyone stayed here? Is it fairly convenient to San Diego and the "must-see's, must-do's"? And is it clean, etc?

La Jolla is a posh little town just north of San Diego. I was not aware that there is an Embassy Suites there it must be new and could be pretty far from the chic downtown area of La Jolla, but maybe so. It could take as much as up to an hour to reach wherever you're going in SD depending on the time of day. Traffic in SD has become pretty bad, although distances are short. There is another Embassy Suites at which I have stayed on the water on Harbor Drive near Broadway, right in downtown SD. Yes, it's clean, convenient etc. This one is walking distance to Seaport Village and from there you can get a trolley to downtown SD. Also close by is the ferry to Coronado Island. There's also a trolley to Tijuana and then negotiate (ahead of time) a +/- $ 8.00 taxi to Rosarito Beach and have a Mexican lunch at Quinta del Mar at La Lena restaurant. They'll help you get a taxi back to the border. SD is a great city for tourists, too bad the traffic is getting so awful.
I live in San Diego and I am sorry to inform you that the Embassy Suites/LaJolla is 5 miles west of La Jolla Village proper and is located in an area called the Golden Triangle on La Jolla Village Drive. The only place of interest you can walk to from there is across the street to a large shopping center. This is not a good location without a car as there is no convenient public transportation and it is about 10 miles from downtown San Diego. Embassy Suites are very pleasant places to stay that provide a good breakfast and a nice cocktail hour. They are oriented towards the business traveler that wants a nice place to stay . My wife and I like them if they are near a location we want to stay. La Jolla Village itself is a section of San Diego that is excellent for tourists where you can walk to the beach at La Jolla Cove and to the Museum of Contemporary Art. There are lots of small shops about and tons of interesting places to eat. There are lovely views of the ocean and coast line. The best place to stay in La Jolla Village is the four diamond Valencia Hotel. Their rack rates start at $190. If you want a suites hotel, the La Jolla Cove Suites have kitchens and startss at $140. Even though it is only two diamond it has a wonderful location overlooking La Jolla cove. While Embassy Suites are great places to stay their locations except for a few excetions are not selected with the tourist in mind that wants to walk to anything of interest. For major sites in San Diego such as the museums and zoo in Balboa Park, Coronado, Wild Animal Park, Old Town--etc. you need a car to reach them easily. There are other selections in the downtown area of La Jolla starting from $120. Where you should stay depends on your interests. Since most areas of interest require travel by car location can be of importance due to traffic conditions unless you plan to remain close to the area around your hotel. The Embassy Suites/La Jolla is very near the major north south freeways and thus is very convenient from that point of view.

Stayed at the Embassy Suites La Jolla for a week this past July 18-25th. We were happy with the size of the bedroom, the bathroom and full living room. Behind a door was refridgerator and microwave. Full cooked to order breakfast saves a lot of time in the AM. Very convenient for us we were 15 minutes from Airport or downtown. This was about 3 trafic lights to highway. University Town Center is across the street about 150 shops. Excellent restaurants in the area. The cove is about 4 miles away. We would return to same location if ever in San Diego again.

I have not stayed at that Embassy Suites but have visited many clients that were staying there. It is a nice place but not very well located for a tourist.
Like Louis, I also live in San Diego. I agree with what he has said. As he said, La Jolla is actually part of San Diego and is not a separate city. It used to be that La Jolla was west of I-5. A few years back, some people arbitrarily extended the boundries of La Jolla and Del Mar east of I-5. I suspect that they hoped to increase the prestige of their location. Embassy suites is very good and I personally would stay at the one in downtown San Diego. You can see all of La Jolla in a short day so I would opt to stay in downtown San Diego and just visit La Jolla for the day. Much better restaurants in downtown San Diego and a lot more to do. You can walk to the Gaslamp area, Horton Plaza, Sea Port Village, Broadway Pier, etc. and there is public transportation to the zoo, Coronado, etc.

Thanks for your help; we are staying at the Prospect Park Inn in La Jolla; so we'll be able to walk around that area; and we'll have a car to venture into San Diego.
Your are right in the thick of La Jolla Village area. Be certain to get some good maps of the beach and San Diego county area The routes in and out of the beaches are limited. Hope you enjoy your stay.
