Elk near Mendocino
 

Hi ,<BR>I am planning to spend the Labor Day weekend at Greenwood Pier Inn in Elk , near Mendocino. Would appreciate any comments about the inn or the area .<BR>Thanks.

Elk is quite rural, very beautiful.

I love that area! I think you'll have a good time. My wife and I have stayed at the excellent Harbor House there a number of times - that's a few hundred yards north of where you'll be staying, on the edge of what passes for town. They have EXCELLENT food at Harbor House, and you can book a table there even if you're not a guest at the inn. <BR> In between Harbor House and your inn is an irish pub with Guiness on tap. Gotta love that. <BR> Be sure to go wine-tasting in the Anderson Valley, just inland from Elk. They grow some damned good whites there, and you get none of the snotty attitude that you sometimes have to put up with in Napa County. Very friendly...<BR> I have not gone sea kayaking there, but it looks like fun. There's also good hiking further up the coast - the hike to the Pygmy Forest is particularly interesting. We have been to Elk a couple of times and we have loved it. We've never stayed at the Greenwood Pier Inn, but we've stayed at the Elk Cove Inn and it was fabulous. Website:www.elkcoveinn.com

Relo,<BR>Elk is a VERY small town south of Mendocino. It's on a lovely stretch of coast, with rock formations offshore - if you are lucky you accommodations will have a view of these. There's probably only one or two restaurants in Elk itself, one of which is the Irish pub mentioned above (Bridget O'Dooleys?). It's a little isolated if you want shops and eateries, but if you plan on an early dinner in Mendocino, it'll be fine. The Philo-Greenwood road connects to Route 128 through the Anderson Valley. The favorable comments posted above about this wine region are correct - it's bucolic, friendly, low-key - the way Napa was 25 years ago. Try Brutocao Cellars for red wines and port. If you like walking in the redwoods, check out Hendy Woods State Park - close to the intersection of the Philo Greenwood Road and Route 128. Hope you have great weather and an enjoyable trip.

My father lives in Mendocino. While lovely, I personally think it is a rather boring place if 'shopping' isn't your sport
