Egg Creams
We wil be traveling to New York in June. On Food Network they mentioned two places in Brooklyn to try these. My husband says that any deli in Manhattan will have them. Are they as good? Or is it worth going to Brooklyn?
Definitely not worth traveling to Brooklyn for (unless you're going anyway). As long as they use Fox's UBet chocolate syrup, it'll be great!!
I personally would not travel to Brooklyn just for an egg cream. There are a number of places in Manhattan that have them.
http://www.chowhound.com/topics/492647 Imo, these drinks hold more appeal for those who had them as a child as they provide some nostalgia. As a drink unto itself, it ain't that special (imo). |
Yeah I agree with mclaurie, I used to work at a ice cream shop in Chicago that used to serve them, and I never understood the appeal.
your husband is right the ones in Manhattan are just as good
Egg creams are good as nostalgia - and any coffee shop (NY type for eating - not Starbucks type) will do one. Fine as an experience - but I wouldn't trek to Brooklyn for one. Just like bagels and black & whites, you can get good ones many places in Manhattan.
nytraveler, I'm interested in all things NYC this week as I'll be there in less than 2 weeks.
What's a black & white? (I did a search and came up with a magazine, ribbons, carnivals and of course, racial issues.) |
Black and whites are large, soft cookies that are covered with half chocolate icing and half vanilla icing.
Ahh, thanks!
Another thing to add to my NYC diet. So far it's pizza, bagels, street food, black and whites and strangely enough cupcakes. I've seen several places that mention "the best cupcake". Good thing it's a walking city. I think I'll pass on the egg cream but is there anything else I should know about? |
Jewish-Knishes, half sour pickles, potato pudding, noodle pudding, rugelach, babka, Kossar's bialys, kasha and bowties
Italian-Rice balls, prosciutto (or lard) bread, smoked mozzarella, pignoli cookies, Italian Cheesecake (ricotta based) General-cheesecake, street pretzels, Gray's Papaya (Two cheap franks with a papaya drink), Sullivan Street Bread, Amy's Bread, Tom Cat Bread, Little Pie company's Apple Walnut Sour Cream Cake, Cones (ice cream on Bleecker Street). Chinese-fried turnip cakes, spicy chow fun, Chinatown Ice Cream Factory, Spanish-Despana chorizos, Iberico ham (Very, very expensive) Eatern European-blintzes, pirogies, and potato pancakes, Kilbesa (Polish sausage) That should get you started |
Thanks Aduchamp1! Now, I'll have to make a couple of trips to NY.
You are welcome. I have lived here all my life and these are many of my guilty pleasures.
Don't skip the egg cream (how can it hurt to try it for yourself?)!!
You're probably right, dmlove.
Maybe having an egg cream in New York is like having an eegee in Tucson, something you don't get until you've had it. |
Ah, the infamous Egg Cream containing neither egg nor cream. All it is is Fox's UBet and soda.
Don't miss getting a Black & White. |
