EEEK! Air Fares to Kauai this winter
Just about finished booking house rental again at Anini beach for the holidays and almost had cardiac arrest when I saw the air fares between Phila and Lihue. Is it just me, or have they gone up enormously this year? No bargains to be had on Expedia or Travelocity. Plus most of the flights stop at ORD, not a good option during the winter if you need to make a connection. They way things are looking, there are mostly two changes between Phila and Lihue, with trips ranging from 14 to 16+ hours, and much more expensive than they've ever been. Sheeesh!
Do you old hands think we should wait to see if the fares come down? I'm kind of afraid to do that . . . we may wind up without any way to get there but backstroking!

ck,
"The Holidays" mean "Christmas/New Year's"?
Current high gas prices are being passed (no pun intended) along to the passengers.
We usually wait until after the summer months gas gouging to book Kauai air fare.
We're keeping our fingers crossed this year, tho.

UA has PHL-SFO-LIH connections.
Fares are about $850 for Mon-Wed travel, but not between 12/13-1/5, i.e. Christmas holiday.
I think there will probably be some fare sale in late summer. Once you see something, jump on it.

How 'bout taveling out of NY? Ya can usually get to CA for $200 r/t (or less) and then pick up one of the many CA to LIH.
Or if ya don't mind flying through HNL, a quick look on travelocity has fares through 1/05 as low as as $357 r/t (Islip to HNL) or $559 r/t (EWR-HNL)
Hope ya find a fare that works for ya.

Thanks, folks, I really appreciate your input. You must have nerves of steel if you can wait till the end of summer to make reservations. But maybe you're not obliged to do your trip over the Christmas-New Year's holiday. We're stuck with the academic calendar, so it's usually a green Kalikimakka for us, and space gets booked pretty early for that time period.

ck,
Some of us have le palle di oro, too.
We, too, are limited to the New Year's holiday trip but only because we love it when it's 40 degrees, gloomy in NoCal and it's 80s, sunny and .08+ on Kauai.
The risk has usually paid off.
But, if you book when it's high, can't you keep checking with the airline and if it does go down, get a voucher/credit towards your next trip?
:-?
