Edison NJ, parking for NJ Transit
I am having no luck calling Parking America to get my question answered, so thought I'd check here.
I see that the parking lots for NJ transit cost just $4 a day, but it appears they are lock boxes. Is it possible to park on Friday afternoon around 5 and leave the car there until Monday afternoon (which will be President's Day, by the way)? How does that work with a lock box situation? Can we put $12 in the box with a note that it is for three days and also a note on our windshield to that effect? Does anyone KNOW, not just guess, which I can do as well? Or is there an attended lot there? And yes, I know we could leave the car somewhere else -- like New Brunswick, but there is a lot of difference between $12 for three days and $66 for three days. |
Those garages which are in sight of the station have lock boxes?
|
Garages? I thought they were only open lots at Edison. That's what the NJ Transit site seems to show and all I can remember when passing by. Lots 1 and 3 are supposedly public, and lot 2 is for monthly permits only.
|
Perhaps I am mistaken then but it seems to me that when I have looked out the train windows during the stop at Iselin I have seen what looked to be parking garages or am I confusing this station with the one you are speaking of?

I suspect you are thinking of Metro Park
Update. NJ Transit called me back to say there is no overnight parking allowed at Edison. Then Parking America called me back and said yes there is. They've replaced the lock boxes with machines. She said it was no problem to park for three days. And she gave me her name telling me if there was any problem and we got a ticket, to call her and she'd void it. |
Neo, yes you are correct. Hope it all works out for your trip.

I do too. Peter works just 14 minutes from the Edison station (although he's even a little closer to New Brunswick's. We like to spend weekends in the city. I usually go by TransBridge bus earlier in the day while he is at work. But it has taken him as much as two hours to make the short trip into the city on Friday after work -- the Lincoln Tunnel is usually the biggest culprit. Add in the high cost of NYC parking over the weekend and the tolls to get there, this just seems like a much saner alternative. We'd like to start off our first anniversary weekend next Friday without all the pressure of the traffic! We suspect Friday being Valentines Day will make next Friday a real nightmare getting into the city after work by car.

If that doesn't work out take a look at Jersey Ave. in New Brunswick? We used to park there, but I'm not sure what their policies are now.
Also, what about a bus for Peter? There are express buses from New Brunswick. |
SusieQQ, it was the $60 to $66 parking in NB we were trying to avoid. Three days parking at Edison is $12.
|
I believe that the parking garage in East Brunswick which is used by Suburban Transit bus passengers is $5 per day...it is the last stop that the bus makes before NYC.

Follow up:
The parking lot at Edison does have a machine. You pay with a credit card $4 per 24 hour day including weekends and holidays. Maximum stay of 5 days. Place receipt on your dash. Worked fine for us and the savings over New Brunswick was significand -- well, $12 instead of $88 or $80 -- as there it is $22 or $20 per calendar day, not per 24 hour day. |
Good to know...Although my local NJ Transit station has free 24 hour parking so I probably will not have a need for Edison info.
|
Susie, which one is that?
|
Patrick,
There are a few stations on the NJ Transit's North Jersey Coast Line with free overnight parking. Some of these lots are small and fill up early with commuters, but not on weekends. Elberon, Allenhurst, Asbury Park, Bradley Beach, Belmar, Spring Lake and Manasquan. |
Ah, that explains it. Unfortunately that doesn't help me on the Northeast Corridor where I don't think there are any free lots.
|
So, you guys should move to the Shore! It is great over here and has lots of pluses! We are 45 minutes from New Brunswick and less than an hour by car to the City.
