Eating crabs in OC,MD.
Answered an Ocean City question earlier & since we are going this summer & haven't been there in 3 years, just wondering. Have there been any new crab places that have opened up in the past few years? How much are steamed crabs going for these days for a dozen? What places do you like to order them from (restaurant or take out)? Thanks.

hi
There's a good crab place right off Rt 50 as you come into the lower part of Ocean City. The outlets are on the left and at that traffic light you make a right turn (opposite outlets) and go down that road (I think it's Golftown Rd) for about two blocks and the place is on the right. Great cream of crab soup too. There's some smaller crab houses up closer to the high rises from 100th street north but I don't know their names. And of course, there's always Phillips. |
Just topping for another run through to see if I can get some more replys to this before it drops out of the top 50 again. Where to go for steamed crabs in OC?

We got some good crabs at the Key West Crab Bag over Memorial Day weekend. It's a little yellow house on the Coastal Highway around 130th street. They have a few tables and also provide carryout. Larges were $44/dozen, but weren't very large. The Fenwick Crab House just across the Delaware line is good, although we haven't been there in a while. The rate at Phillips was $59/dozen. Higgins has a low all-you-can-eat rate; just avoid the fried chicken they try to stuff you with.

Thanks for the reply's. I agree about Higgins, definitley have to watch out for the fillers. Have eaten there a number of times, & will probably go back again this year. The kids have 4 or 5 T-shirts from there, for each year we have gone. As expected, it appears that the cost has gone up, last time in OC, a dozen large crabs were about $40.

Hooper's Island.

We've always like the Mug and Mallet on the boardwalk. Haven't been there for years! Hope it's still there!

theres a crab house in bethany beach, in front of Sea Colony that's pretty good, but i cant remember the naem. its a one sotry building, sort of dumpy looking, picnic tables with paper rolled out on them. Was good last time i was there (2003) but not cheap.

Another vote for Hoopers - just over the Route 50 bridge (downtown) and on the right . It is a big barn on the water so you can sit outside overlooking the bay - the best! I'm going in 3 weeks!

Mug & Mallet is still there, and you can see it at the following Ocean Gallery Boardwalk webcam:
http://www.oceangallery.com/cam-big.asp We typically prefer Waterman's all-you-can-eat crabs, on Route 50 in West OC before you cross the bridge, as if I remember correctly they have air conditioning. I've seen lots of OC and Sea Pines locals go there. Important to note that the newly-rebuilt Hoopers ("mysterious fire", after which the great state of MD helped them rebuild) does not. |
