Easy Trip from Denver to Sante Fe
My husband and I will be driving from Denver to Santa Fe in early September. Is there a route that does not take us over a high mountain pass. The last time we drove from Denver to Durango we drove over the Ouray Pass and still have nightmares about the trip! Sorry, there are scaredy-cats in the world and we are two of them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you take I-25 from Denver to Santa Fe you'll need to drive over Raton Pass which is a pretty easy drive. It's nothing like Red Mountain Pass. You can watch Raton Pass videos on YouTube to get a better idea of the drive.

In years past I drove I-25 between Denver & Santa Fe regularly and as an acrophobic can tell you there are no edges on the entire journey, utterly civilized. The pass is only a problem in a snowstorm which will be unlikely in early September.
Enjoy Santa Fe, one of my favorite cities. |
Sometime is off. I-25 between Denver and Santa Fe does go over Raton pass but it is only 7800 feet. That is hardly more than a big hill and doubt if you will even notice it since you are on an four lane divided interstate road. You would not have gone over Ouray pass between Denver and Durango. It is 13,000 feet and basically a one lane, gravel jeep road. Doubt if you did that. You might have gone over Red Mountain pass at 11,000 feet. It is two lane paved road that does have some steep sections. You will be fine on I-25.
