I'm so gald to hear you are all booked for your trip. I have a couple quick suggestions for the east side of Hawaii.
If you have a desire to take a helicopter ride over the volcano, they leave from Hilo. If the lava is really flowing it can be spectacular.
You will want to get your groceries before you go out to your Kapoho house, probably in Hilo. We like to eat at Cafe Pesto in Hilo and at the end of the Red Road Drive by the walk to the new black sand beach is the little Kalapana Cafe - walk up and order, very casual. In the Malama Market Center at the entrace to the little town of Pahoa is the Aloha Outpost Cafe, sandwichs, ice cream, smoothies.
Have a great time.

I hope you enjoy the Lagoon house as much as we did. Hopefully some day we will be able to go back and stay there again.
Gloria gave great advice, do buy your groceries in Hilo. If you like Thai try the one in Pahoa, food is very good.
Also at the end of the road is a shave ice stand and the house that is there was spared from the last big lava flow. if you happen to be there the 3rd. Sat. night of the month they do a family style luau which is prepared by the children to teach them traditional hawaiian culture. When we went there was at least 3 hours of hawaiian music all performed by the parents. The children do some dancing and it's a wonderful experience and we were made to feel very welcome.

Hi joeyi - thanks for the further info! We won't be there on the 3rd Saturday of the month though, unfortunately.
Just one more question - did you see any cane spiders when staying in the house? I read about them in the EXCELLENT 'revealed' books and have been freaking out ever since. If there's any chance, I would rather stay elsewhere! Also, the other house, up in north Oahu by the beach, is worrying me!

We stayed at the Lagoon House II a couple of years ago-and at the 3 bedroom Lagoon House last February (and will be there again for 6 days in March)and did not see any cane spiders (or other bugs) in either of the houses). In fact in 12 trips to the BI in the last 8 years have only seen a cane spider once--in south Kona--when we were staying in a very rustic beach house and it ran like a frightened rabbit when we swatted at it and we never saw it again.
As to the vog, we were in south Kona (west side of the island) last week and the vog was much, much less than it was when we were there in April. Mornings were clear with clouds moving in during the afternoon. The vog seemed to be on mostly on the upper slopes of Mauna Loa and a ways off the coast which interefered with watching the sun drop into the ocean at sunset on several days. Though we also had several perfect sunsets--even one with a green flash. And when you're on the west side of the island the vog rarely gets as far north as Kohala.
As to restaurants, in Hilo we like the Hilo Bay Cafe (in the non-scenic mall by Wal Mart) great food and in Pahoa, Paolo's--small menu, but a Florentine chef cooks your food (how he got from Florence to Pahoa, I don't know). And if you're there Saturday or Wednesday, do go to the Hilo Farmer's Market--great fresh produce.

Hi Martym
Glad you had a good time on your recent visit to HI and that the vog was much improved - that's great news!
Thanks for the (attempt to) reassurance re the cane spiders. I am terrified of even tiddlers. It's worrying that you mention the beach hut though, as that's the type of plac e we'll be staying in N Oahu. Hmm. I've been searching around for information and came across to absolute gems of stories. Firstly, the horror one

and, secondly, this one is hilarious and really does give a marvellous insight into how fears can turn you into dements - this is certainly how I began thinking as soon as I read about the cs's in the 'blue book'!

I am going to try to forget about them now! (Haha - as if!)
Thanks also for the restaurant recommendations - notes made!
