East Nashville or Hillsboro Village

Going to Nashville overnight in a couple of weeks for the first time. These two neighborhoods look cool. We will have a car (and a dog). Which area of these or some other do you recommend we get a hotel in? We love coffee shops, ethnic restaurants, non-chain shopping. You know, the usual. Thanks!

I don't believe there are hotels in either of those areas. Parts of East Nashville can be iffy. I'd suggest looking around the Vanderbilt/Centennial Park area. It's about a mile from Hillsboro Village and 2 - 3 miles from the downtown tourist area.

Fido and Bongo Java are good, non-chain coffee shops. If you want awesome, authentic Southern cooking eat at Monell's. There are two locations and they are both fantastic.

Are you going to a show at the Ryman? If you haven't, you really should!

Can't help you with the neighborhood choice, although I'm not far away right now.

I second there are no hotels in Hillsboro Village. You could stay along West End/Vanderbilt and drive around the campus to get to HV. Or stay down on Broadway near Music Row as there are some chain hotels there. It's really easy to drive from that area to both HV and East Nashville. If you have a car it'll be 5-10 minutes to HV and maybe 15 minutes to EN if you aren't caught up in traffic. I live in 12South (no hotels) and it takes me 10 minutes to get downtown via 8th Avenue/Korea Boulevard. From there to EN might be another 10 minutes on a good day.

You may also enjoy strolling along 12th Avenue South (which is the heart of the !2South neighborhood.). There is Josephine, The FlipSide, Burger Up, Mafiaoza's Pizza, 12South Taproom, Five Daughters Bakery, Frothy Monkey (coffee shop), Urban Grub...all good restaurants that are walkable along one road. There are also some very cute shops between the restaurants - Emerson Grace, Cadeau (my fave home shop ever), Draper James (Reese Witherspoon's shop), and at the end White's Mercantile. Have fun!

OMG-Five Daughters Bakery is sooo good! I would make a detour to 12 South just for their doughnuts! Yum!
