What are some good, reasonably-priced eating places in the area, including surrounding areas? Italian and NY specialty foods?

Any attractions in the area?

I live in the area. There are few major attractions near there. I guess the most interesting is Union Square Park and they have a wonderful green market which is open on M, W, F, and Saturday with Saturday having the most vendors.

Is there any reason you must stay around East 19th St? There are countless things to see, by taking the bus, subway or a taxi.

Here is a list I have posted a few times before and are mainly East Village. Unless otherwise stated it is inexpensive to moderately expensive.

Au Za'atar which very reasonably priced French-Mideastern

Indian-Haveli, Saravanaa Bhavan, Sahib (on Lex and about 26 St.)

Inexpensive Italian- La Marca (3rd Ave. and 22 Street, only opened noon-10 PM, Mon-Fri) Great Value

Taiwanese Bao-The Baohaus-The guy with the TV show and book. A new place is fabulous called Drunken Dumpling. They make soup dumplings among a few other things on their limited menu including an oversized soup dumpling of which they only make 25 a day.

Szechuan- Hot Kitchen on 2nd Ave and Xian Famous on St Marks which is a local chain.

Burgers- Brindle Room, Black Iron (also have wonderful onion rings and veggie fries), Paul’s (local divey spot), Corner Bistro (on everyone’s list, zoo on weekends),

Hip American-Brindle Room

Hip Filipino both owned by the same people Jeepney and Maharlikan (more expensive)

Medium priced Italian-Cacio e Pepe, Gnocco, Supper (cash only), Luzzos (Wood burning pizza oven), Le Zie (7th Ave and about 19th),

Eastern European- Veselka,

BBQ-Mighty Quinn

Hot soup- Brodo-Sidewalk opening on First Ave as part of Hearth.

French Bistro- Lucien (more expensive), the good cheaper ones have disappeared

Greek-Pylos (little more expensive), Taverna Kyuclaides for fish

Tapas- Tia Pol, Nai, La Boqueria, Café Mono (more expensive)

Dessert-Veniero's

Brunches-City Bakery (18th off 5th), Clinton Street Bakery, weekend is a zoo), Esperanto

Pizza whole pies-Motorino, Lombardi's, Gruppo,

Ramen-Ippudo’s is always a zoo, Rai, Rai Ken

Serbian-Kafana on Ave C.

Pizza by the slice-Artichoke (14th Between First and Second) Bizarre service with a line because the pizza is good and the management is goofy

Seafood-Mary’s Fish Camp (cramped, no reservations, moderate), Luke’s Lobster (just lobster rolls, limited seating) Aquagrill (very expensive) Taverna Kyuclaides

Ice Cream-Cones on Bleecker, Il Laboratorio de Gelato, Chinatown Ice Cream Factory, Cones and Sundaes (East 10th), Grom (Italian chain), Van Leewen, Davey’s (Our current favorite)

Chinatown-Big Wong. Joe’s Ginger, NY Noodletown

Dim Sum-Jing Fung, Golden Unicorn, Nom Wah on Doyers.

Jewish Delis-2nd Ave Deli, Katz’s (These are expensive for sandwiches but worth every bite) Katz’s has become a zoo and somewhat unpleasant

Turkish-Turkish Kitchen (Very good values are the daily prix fixe lunch and Sunday buffet)

Bagels-there are about six places that make bagels on First Ave between 12th Street and 20th Street. Our favorite remains Ess-A-Bagel. Tompkins Square is good but chances are 50-50 they will get your order wrong.

Expensive but great prix fixe lunches-Gotham, Tocqueville

I guess the question is how far east? If it's in the Union Square/Gramercy/Irving Place area, there's one group of restaurants, but if you are talking about 1st Avenue it's a different restaurant landscape entirely since it's near Beth Israel and Peter Cooper Village.

BTW, most of the restaurants on Park Ave South are so so and the worst in the area is the Coffee Shop on Union Square West and Rolf's om 3rd Ave. In Zagat's I think Rolf's gets the lowest score of any non-chain place. It is vile.

One NY tradition is to eschew chain restaurants.
