Easiest Way of Getting to the Outer Banks
Hi, I am a 24 year old grad student from Connecticut. Obviously, as a student I am on a fixed income. I am trying to find the easiest way of getting to the Outer Banks this summer from Connecticut. I understand the closest airport is in Norfolk, so if I fly into their. What's the cheapest/easiest way to make my way to the Outer Banks towns. I would rent a car, but being under the age of 25 they charge me an extra 200 dollars for a week. Is there bus service, a cheap shuttle/charter service, etc.?

No shuttle service that I know off. If you wanted to visit the island you would need a car to drive down. Some of the OBX is very barren so mass transit is not an option. What part are you staying? Even if you stay in Nags Head, a car is nice to have.

totally concur with the last post. We have been traveling to the OBX for 30+ years. It really can't be done without a car. There is a local airport in Dare County www.fly2mqi.com, but even then you would need, at the least, a bike or scooter to get around.

Actually there are a number of shuttle services from Norfolk to the Outer Banks. The not so good news for Tasha is that the cost of the shuttle will equal or exceed the premium added to the car rental for an under 25 driver.
Tasha, have you looked at craigslist for a ride-share?
I agree with the others that a car is really useful once you're there. (Although I do recall spending a month in Nags Head when I was just out of college and made do just fine without a car...)
Good luck to you Tasha!
For the record, here's what's available. We've recommended The Connection to friends on a number of occasions. No complaints about the service.
Charter Flights:
Outer Banks Airways: (252) 441-8687
SeaAir: (252) 453-3656
Limos/Shuttles/Tours:
The Connection: (252) 449-2777
Island Hopper Shuttle: (252) 995-6771
Island Limousine: (800) 828-LIMO(5466), (252) 441-LIMO(5466)
Karat Limo: (252) 473-9827
Sandy Beach Tours: (252) 441-9800

Yes, driving around once I get there won't be a problem because I am joining my family who will already have a car. I am just trying to avoid having someone drive all the way to Norfolk from Rodanthe to pick me up. I feel bad. I was hoping there would be a slightly less expensive option than what I have found. Thank you for the tips, and if anyone thinks of another option please let me know.

I 've done the drive from Norfolk airport to Corolla and Duck at least a half dozen times over past decade. Over past few years the road has been widened and the trip is much faster now than it used to be, if that's any consolation.
I did find a shuttle service: http://www.calltheconnection.com/map.html
