Earthquakes
 

Just got back from walking the dog and logged on to CraigsList - (THE bulletin board for San Francisco) - and everyone was talking about the big earthquake we just had. I didn't feel a thing. It's such a shame when something as fantastic as a natural earth shaker happens (a harmless one) and you miss out on it.

Got me wondering if any out of state travellers have felt them for the first time while visiting - and how they reacted.

I was scared to death while visiting Las Vegas about four years ago. A pretty hefty quake hit in the middle of the night and I evacuated the Mirage via 23 floors of dank stairwells, barefoot, just to get out. As a Californian I was really worried that Nevada buildings might not be quite up to snuff for a big shaker.

Didn't feel a thing down here in the South Bay. Fine with me!

I didn't feel anything in San Francisco. Then again, I was on 24th St in Noe Valley--nice solid bedrock!

Weird I suppose - but I have lived my entire life in NorCal (except for a few years in the UK) and have NEVER felt an earthquake. Even the '89 biggie which a lot of folks felt up this way - If I hadn't been watching the World Series I wouldn't have known anything . . .

Normally, I feel earthquakes of 3.5 or higher that no one else feels, but I didn't feel this one at all. My daughter, who was in another room, said everything was shaking. Hmmm. PS, I'm also in Noe Valley!

Ha! I was in my apartment @ 24th & Guerrero in Noe Valley for the '89 quake.

Coincidence? Yeah, probably.

Don't feel bad SF, my son lives in Tokyo and for the past three years, has felt only one of many tremblers. He is always disappointed :)
I felt one small shaker in LA, lying by the pool. Just felt like a small breeze moved the chair, until I noticed all the water in the pool was at one end ~Yikes~

I felt it! The first big jolt I just thought was the jerk upstairs, but so far he hasn't accomplished making my apartment roll, which came after the jolt.

I felt the Earth move last night. O:)

Right now I'm more worried about the truck full o' wine, 9,500 gallons, that turned over on 101 no/bound this morning!

I was walkling on Piedmont Avenue~yup the epicenter~and did not feel a thing.
We live very close to "it" and the house contents remained in place. But, when I went back to my office in Berkeley at 7:30 I found all sorts of things on the floor. Go figure!

And..retrofitting is on our calendar!

I lived in San Jose for 5 years and only felt tiny tremblers. Moved to Philadelphia and experienced the biggest one I've ever felt.

We are coming to San Francisco soon and don't want to hear about earthquakes!

Downtown San Francisco - did not feel anything this time! When was it? At what time?

Don't worry April - the chances of there being an earthquake of any magnitude while you are in SF is very slim.

During the Loma Prieta quake I was in downtown Santa Cruz - it shook us pretty good down there.

US Geological Survey says it hit at 6:40 PM PT, centered near Piedmont. Magnitude 3.9-- a good little jolt. Hayward fault, for the seismologists in the crowd. No reason to put off a trip to the Bay Area, IMHO. Go, enjoy, rock and roll!! :)
