Earthquake! in Orange County
Just had an earthquake here in Seal Beach. Heading outside now.
I'm in Ridgecrest, about 150 miles north of LAX and we felt it pretty good up here. No damage, but got our attention.
News reports indicate 5.8 magnitude, no immediate reports of damage. Stay safe out there...
News is saying epicenter is Chino Hills. My office is in Rowland Heights so felt it pretty strong. Just had an aftershock too.
Checking in from Beverly Hills. Long, rolling, "surf" quake. 15-20 seconds. Quite a ride!
I'm sitting in the SNA Red Carpet Club, and it shook pretty hard (it's a glass-enclosed space on the upper level overlooking the concourse). Dust fell from the ceiling. Everyone just stopped in their tracks. If it had happened five minutes earlier, I would have been in the elevator.
According to USGS the first one was 5.8 and two following later at 2.8 and 2.4 magnitude.
There was a sharp jolt here in my corner of N. San Diego. Some creaking, and the chandelier over my dining room table moved very slightly.
Decided to get my car out of the garage, which is under the building, and park it on the street in case that was a fore-shock.
No damage here in old town Seal Beach that I saw. There apparently were a LOT of people on the beach and in the water judging from the shouting and screaming I heard coming from that direction during the quake. Felt like a train was coming (which of course it could not be) at first, but I recognized it as a quake fairly quickly. Lots of shaking and a bit of swaying. Pretty good jolt. This was my 5th quake, four here in L.A. area and a mild one in Tokyo (on the first night of my first trip to Japan. |
Curious that USGS has downgraded it to a 5.2. Maybe it's because I'm on the 10th floor of a 1960s building, but it sure felt bigger than that. I was on the phone with a woman in her home in Newport Beach, and she was freaking out.
Hugs from San Francisco. It can be scary. Go get a drink :)
Was in a Pasadena restaurant near train tracks, I thought a train was rumbling by, very strong rolling motion. But when no train appeared we realized it was an earthquake and everybody jumped up and ran outside.
Felt the rolling action in Long Beach.
Friend working downtown said some of the buildings had run earthquake evacuation drills but as far as he saw no damage. If you felt it, fill out a "Did you feel it" report here http://pasadena.wr.usgs.gov/shake/ca...ciim_form.html Also you can view the felt intensity maps. |
USGS downgraded it to 5.4.
Checking in from Laguna Niguel. Certainly felt it on the fourth floor of the Ritz-Carlton. My first thought was the China earthquake. No damage at all that I can see.
