Early October trip

Peterboy (husband) and I are planning an early October trip to southern Utah/Co - after last year's early Sept trip, I'm looking forward to much cooler temps and lower humidity. Last year was HOT! And even a bit humid. Coming from the 'dewpoint-is-currently-71' in northern NY, I enjoy the hot, dry desert southwest. I'm betting that the cooler Oct temps will be incredible!

Well, we're planning to be in Moab on Fri, Oct 4 and Sat, Oct 5, and wanted to put the word out. Hoping to do a hike into Seven Mile Canyon on Sat to check out rock art - if anyone is interested (Dayle?)

If you need a really nice B&B - http://www.moabdreaminn.com/ Cali Cochita is lovely.

Thanks, DebitNM. Cali Cochita looks wonderful. Although we've stayed in some beautiful and unique B&B's, Peter and I are such early birds (particularly in the desert southwest), the timing of the featured breakfast is rarely convenient for our morning schedule.

We bring along our camping stove and percolater to make our own (very early) coffee (yes, we're fussy coffee drinkers - gotta have the good stuff). Then we can be out hiking or exploring before 6-7am.

On our Oct trip, we will likely be camping near Moab for a few nights, then grabbing a room for Sat night so we can freeze water and stock up on food for more camping.

My wife has one of those portable Keurig machines(the smallest one they make-requires electric though). We like to use a French Press when traveling/camping too.

Thought I'd post this again to see if anyone will be in Moab area in early Oct. We won't be spending any time in the national parks this time but will be exploring Seven Mile Canyon and other rock art sites around Moab on Oct 3-5.

I know that you'll be in Torrey later in our trip, Dayle. We will be spending most of our time in the Southeast corner of Utah this trip - Canyon of Ancients, Cedar Mesa - but we will likely come up Rte 95 from Natural Bridges to get back to Springdale for our last night. Maybe we can find a time to meet for lunch or dinner.

If you haven't been up to Sego Canyon/Thompson Wash, for rock art, it is worth a look. It is not very far north of I 70 and there is an exit marked Thompson wash just a few miles east of 191. Go north on the only road through town and check both sides of the wash. There are both pictographs and petroglyph from a variety of times/cultures.

There are also some nice petroglyphs on Kane Creek road and Potash Road right in Moab.

We'll be there for a few days the week before you and are staying at Cali this time. Hope you have a wonderful trip and we do too.

sharondi Aug 13th, 2013 03:23 AM

Thank you for the tips, emalloy. It's been quite a long time since we went to Sego - may have to stop again. We've also done Potash Rd but not Kane Creek. We will finally take the time to do the Moab Rock Art tour - the golf course, Kane Creek, etc.
If our time in Moab was overlapping, we would have loved to have you join us to explore Seven Mile Canyon. Have a wonderful trip!

Sharondi, there are a couple of sites along Kane creek road. One is just to the right of the camp ground. Look for the crack in the cliff, there are a couple of sticks with notches that look like they may be used for ladders but I don,t know if they are old or not. Farther along, a short way past where the road is unsaved is a large rock on the right quite near the road, with a birthing scene and some other petroglyphs.

emalloy Aug 13th, 2013 05:00 AM

That is the road is unpaved. Autocorrect

Thanks emalloy! Looking forward to the cooler temps in Oct. We plan to do a good deal of camping - had such a great time on last year's trip camping in Needles, Capitol Reef and Red Rock (near Bryce). I'm excited about the trip but I don't want summer to end so quickly! I'm content to wait...

So, emalloy, are you going mostly to Moab this fall or is it part of a longer trip?

emalloy Aug 14th, 2013 03:27 AM

We will be taking a trip with old friends who have never been to the area. I got a great price for flights into ABQ and will head up to.Mesa Verde for one night then two nights Moab one Blanding (I wanted 3 in Moab but will do some of the state parks/BLM areas we haven't hit) then it will be what moves us. Probably Bandelier and Santa Fe.

Have a wonderful trip. Yourself.

Hi sharondi (and emalloy),

I will be in Torrey 10/10 and at Boulder Mtn Inn 10/11 and 10/12. My friends are driving up from Albuquerque (their home) and have never been to Escalante at all. We will probably do easy hikes as my best friend is not a serious hiker.

Will you guys be anywhere near? I would LOVE to finally meet you! I wish I could take some more time off, but am insanely busy at work and can't change the existing plans.

Dayle

Hi Dayle,
Peter and I might be at Boulder Mtn Lodge for 10/11. Maybe dinner at Hell's Backbone Grill? Still working out some trip details with friends over near Bluff, but will keep you posted! It would be wonderful to finally meet you too!

Dayle Sep 6th, 2013 06:32 PM

Hi Sharon!

Sorry I have been so busy at work and home that I haven't been checking in here much. Will you be at Boulder Mtn Lodge 10/11? If so, I would love to get together for dinner. We actually already have reservations for that night (me, best friend, and her fiancé). Let me know and we should finally get to meet!

sharondi Sep 8th, 2013 05:24 AM

Hi Dayle,
Sadly, there were no rooms available at Boulder Mtn Lodge on the 11th, which is the only night we'll be around the Rte 12 corridor. We took a room in Torrey instead. We will gladly stop at Hells Backbone for their fantastic breakfast on the morning of the 12th. My email is: [email protected] - we can talk directly that way.
