Early 2017 Broadway Banter - "Come From Away"
An unlikely sounding musical of the story of the passengers of the 38 planes that were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland on 9/11 and the local townspeople who rose to the occasion (the "Plane People" as they were called almost doubled the population of Gander).
It's been in previews in the US and opened last night in Toronto - here's a review http://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/...ticle33012704/ We have tickets for next week - and wanted to give a heads up here as it opens in NYC on March 12 - it's a surprisingly uplifting story of a terrible time. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local...b62_story.html |
Wanted to see that when it was in DC, but dates didnt work out. Got good reveiws as I recall.
|
Definitely planning on seeing this, but not sure of my schedule next spring just yet.
|
I loved it in DC and can't wait to see it again in NYC. Get tickets now. Once it is reviewed here it'll be another Hamilton.
The only thing that could kill it would be bringing in a star. It is an ensemble piece! |
Sounds good!
Hamilton was GREAT! |
The phrase "making the best of a bad situation" comes to mind!

Saw it here in DC and really enjoyed and recommend it. Had low expectations as thought it might be hokey. Not. Don't think it will be "anotherHamilton". - but definitely worth seeing!

A nice article that just came in via email -

My friend and I just ordered our tickets for a mid-April performance. Yea!
|
I look forward to seeing this extraordinary piece. We all have our stories of that day, but to look at the day after and human kindness the transpired must be celebrated.
|
Yay! I'm coming back sooner than expected. At least five days in Feb., maybe seven. I hope to do a show each day!
Will be looking forward to more recommendations. A NYC friend wants to go see Glenn Close in "Sunset Boulevard". The $35 million bill, which covers Nov. 8 through Jan. 20, covers pretty much all of the reimbursement costs. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/26/th...dway.html?_r=0 |

Saw Come From Away last night - it was utterly charming. A musical about 9-11 you say? Uplifting you say? And it works.
12 very talented cast members play 34 roles - switching accents from around the world (and Newfoundland - a completely different accent as well!) |
Thanks, Elizabeth!

Like starrs I'm looking for show recs for the first part of February. Several that I would have seen will close end of January and others (like Come from Away) opening too late- I'm in town 2/5-2/12. I'll be seeing Dear Evan Hansen, Natasha Pierre, Sunday in the Park and Spamilton. I've got time for two more shows at least! Doesn't have to be a musical, off-broadway is good too. Already decided against The Present. What am I missing?
|
If Cagney is playing see it!
|
Thanks SueNYC-had missed this one (Cagney) completely. I've also just read reviews for two shows just opened-Made in China and a new production of The Tempest. With Thursday matinees in the mix there may be time for all of these!
|
BroadwayBox is offering discounts for all performances of Come From Away February 18-March 11.
http://www.broadwaybox.com/shows/come-away/ |
I'm seeing it on Sunday again! There was a great 38 dollar deal for early previews.
|
Boy I hope the discounts for Come From Away aren't indicating a lack of interest.....is this common for a new show?
|
The low prices are partly for previews and the discounts what's the show opens or on seeds that are $150 anyway. So a $40-$50 discount early in the run especially in March is pretty appropriate.
|
SEATS NOT seeds.
|
Just returned from the 3rd preview. Get you tickets now!

SueNYC -- I read on a Broadway forum that in the dress rehearsal Friday night (attended by 9/11 families and first responders by invitation) the director asked for indulgence as there were several new pages of script. Could you detect any changes?
|
Seemed like a few of the songs were enhanced. My only problem with it is they have to work on the sound a bit in the opening number. The orchestra was so enthusiastic they were competing with the singers and the audience needs that time to get used to the slight accent.
The friends I brought with me and the person I sat next to knew little or nothing about it and they were all blown away by it. Amazing show with a cast of 14 playing oh so many parts. Now's your chance to get tickets. Later on will be much harder but I think the show will travel. It's already been to San Diego, Seattle, DC, Gander and Toronto. |
Come From Away opening night on Broadway is tonight - it feels like the whole country of Canada is rooting for them! Break a leg!
|
I was looking at three performances with mid balcony aisle seats. Late March. I blinked - they're gone. All three performances. I knew it was time to pull the trigger, but life got in the way.
I am expecting an enormous success. |
We are seeing two plays in June. Come From Away, row Q center orchestra, $127. On the other hand, Sunset Blvd, Mezzanine row 2 center $199.
Looking forward to both. So sad that Bette in Dolly is through the roof expensive. We have lots of Canadian friends and relatives, so this rings true for us. |
Here's the Times review... https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/12/t...tionfront&_r=0
|
Thank you Sue. I really wish I had pulled the trigger on later this month tickets and not blinked.
I did have trouble with this sentence in the review…. "And it may provide just the catharsis you need in an American moment notorious for dishonorable and divisive behavior." I don't know how to interpret it. |
I think they are talking about today's world.
