E-Coli In the Keys??

I posted earlier today concerning a trip to the Florida Keys in June. This afternoon I was researching this forum on earlier posts this year, and I kept seeing reference to e-coli bacteria invading the waters and to enter at your own risk. Is this a common occurance in the Keys or a rarity that just happened? I would hate to plan and trip and have this happen while we were there. Any advise please?

Jayde, our daughter, who lives in Key West, told us that she has been wind-surfing most of the summer and fall, and has had no problems. But to be sure, why don't you check out http://keysnews.com/ for the Key West newpaper and a message bbs there. Maybe they can tell you just how safe it is.

The Key West beaches have recently been reopened.

You can also find out surveillance data regarding E.Coli at the Centers for Disease Control website www.cdc.gov Also search for Florida Department of Health, this info is public record & usually health departments will issue advisories and updates on a monthly or more frequent basis.

We were in the Keys a few weekks ago.

My understanding is that the bacteria problem is a result of the sewer system undergoing major work/replacement.

You have to get out of Kew West to avoid the problem.
Dick...it has been cleared as safe for swimming now. The overhaul will take sometime and from what I've heard, the problem most likely will return with rainy season. In fact the article I read in the Tampa Tribune said warnings will be routinely posted after rain...which is pretty every day in the summer!
