durango or telluride?

We were in Durango summer of 2000 and could not see Mesa Verde due to the fires..It looks like our trip this August could be the same..Ive never been to Telluride and was thinking of spending our 2 nights there prior to a week we have in Breckenridge..(We had planned to stay in Durango) any advice?

Telluride

Durango is pretty much just a nice town. You should do the train from there though.

Telluride. Also consider Ouray.

We had a great time in Telluride, great scenery, wonderful Victorian buildings, beautifully maintained, good restaurants, fun things to do. We did not enjoy the town of Ouray as we found it unattractive and loaded with gift shops.

Durango has clear skies now, the train is running, and Mesa Verde is fully open.

Telluride. We just returned from that area a few days ago. We were not impressed with durango, silverton, or ouray. Telluride was spectacular. We stayed 4 days and wished we had more time. The drive from durango through the million dollar highway is very beautiful and worth it. We stayed in mountain village at the bear creek lodge. We had a very very upscale 1 bedroom condo--pool, sauna, etc. on the mountain top for $138.00 a night. It's a great place.
