Durango - one free day, what to do

We have 2 full days in Durango, one day will be the D&SRR. Looking for suggestions on what to do the other day.

We are two adults that would be interested in some easy hikes, or a horseback ride.

What is there to do/see in town? We're not particularly interested in shopping, unless the shops are unique to the area. (i.e. Southwestern). Local history would be of interest.

After Durango we will be heading to Mesa Verde.

Thanks.!

I would suggest a float on the animas river. It has been years since we have been there, but we really enjoyed it. It depends on what time of the year you are going; the water is cold

We'll be there the first week of Sept. Wouldn't the water level will be low that time of year?

You might want to do the zipling/train combo. The only way to get to the zipling is on the train. It is one of my favorite things I have ever done.

September the Animas River will be very low, floating will be almost impossible.

What kind of vehicle will you have? That will help me with hiking suggestions [so I know what kind of road you can go on].

I suspect we will have a 2 wheel drive vehicle. The rates are outrageous for 4WD. As another poster stated, the car rental rates at the Denver airport are crazy.
