Durango in September
Going to Durango for Labor Day w.e. Could someone suggest a nice, not too pricey place for a couple. What kinds of activities are available in the area besides hiking and the narrowgauge train?

Durango, Colorado or Durango, Mexico?

Durango, Colorado!! One of my favorite places to visit... We stayed in a B+B, about 10 minutes outside the city-the Logwood Inn. It was very nice and the food was delicious. <BR> <BR>Durango is a great town and you will find lots of shops and great restaurants-I will look in my travel diary and find some to recommend. <BR> <BR>Have a great time!

I can promise you that Durango will be very busy over Labor Day. Also, the weather is probably perfect with warm days and a touch of fall in the night. <BR>What price range hotel? Comfort Inn - 2 person about $90; Best Western-Mountain Shadows- $90; Best Western Durango Inn and Suites $125 and up; Days Inn Durango $65; EconoLodge $75+ It is high season for Durango. <BR>Actvities can be a trip to Mesa Verde, raft trip down the river, Melodrama at the Strater Hotel (get tickets early), horseback trip,or a drive to Pagosa Hot Springs.

We were in Durango a number of years ago in mid-September. The weather was stunning -- very warm during the day, very cool at night -- except the day we went to Mesa Verde, which was cool and misty, which only added to the mystique of the place (although I was 6 mos. pregnant and a little nervous about scampering over the slick stone steps . . .but I'm sure that's why my 14-yr-old son is so fascinated with archeology today!). One tip if you're planning on taking the narrow-gauge train -- first, probably will need reservations, and you might want to consider taking the train up and getting a cab back, which someone had told us to do. Worked great, and was fairly cost-effective -- and one way on the train was enjoyable, but the return trip might have been tedious. Have fun -- hope the restaurants are still as excellent as they were then!

Echo earlier postings. Will be in Durango during Labor Day weekend myself. Best Western Mountain Shadows was suggested by a native and is where I'm staying. Although they had not stayed there, said it had 3 diamonds in AAA and looked clean from the outside. 970-247-5200 Website at www.destinationcoupons.com <BR>Tickets for the Melodrama can be found here:www.diamondcirclemelodrama.com Suggest you use the search function on this site for info on the narrow-gage train from Durango to Silverton. Seems to be no middle ground, either love it or hate it. If you do it, the train/bus combo seems better. I will be doing a jeep trip from Ouray to Telluride instead.
