Durango Colorado

Just wondered if there are any campgrounds
around the durango area that are maybe inexpensive.....Hate to spend more than 20.00. Is that train ride really worth the
money. the scenery looks impressive...Or
do you think just taking drives can get you
the same scenery....
We are going to that area arount the middle of May.
Thanks for any help. Moekay

moekay,
I can't help you with campgrounds (try Woodalls guide), but we did the train ride and it is amazing. The train goes places that the road doesn't, and it's easier to enjoy the scenery when you're not the one driving!
It is a fairly long trip (3 hrs) and we opted to take the bus back (1 hr) which was a good decision for my family. Definitely request an open car - just watch out for cinders/ash - you see much more than in the enclosed cars.
In the summer months, the train books up quickly - not sure about May.

There are two KOA's in Durango and the one just north of town is absolutely gorgeous! The setting is along the river and the campground is one of the prettiest I've ever stayed in. They have the standard amenities and during the summer they serve pancake breakfasts and other foods at the snack bar. We camped there with kids years ago - staying in all sorts of places - and that campground was our favorite by far.

Another idea that may be less expensive is to camp in Mesa Verde National Park. Nice surroundings there.

No, you can't get the same scenery driving. When you take the narrow-gauge railway from Durango to Silverton you will be absolutely amazed that they could carve even a narrow-gauge railbed out of those mountains. The scenery over the Animas River is spectacular.

Not to say that the drive isn't beautiful too. It is. Ouray is called Little Switzerland and that section is amazing!
