dulles-washington dc
can you help me plan transportation from dulles to dc? i've been to some web sites but can those of you who are familiar with the area help?
we're arriving via united in dc at 5:15 pm, sept. 10. we need to get to eastern market to transfer to another train. what to you recommend...other than taxi? thanks. willis |
What do you mean you need to get to Eastern Market to transfer to another train?
You could take the Washington Flyer bus or the Metrobus 5a to a Metrorail station. Or of course a car service www.metwashairports.com is the website for IAD and DCA. |
Eastern Market is not a transfer point. What is your final destination via train?
|
Eastern Market is a metro station, not a train station. Even if you meant the metro (subway, underground), it wouldn't make sense to go all the way to Eastern Market to get on it if you start at Dulles.
I'd just take those group vans, Supershuttle. The big advantage in DC of those is you do not have to reserve ahead of time like some cities, you just go to their counter when you arrive. At IAD, it's at the lower level. They charge around $30 from IAD to central DC. www.supershuttle.com |
at this point, we know a transfer at eastern market is necessary to get to our rental.
|
If cost doesn't matter, take a taxi directly to the rental or rental office. Otherwise, take the Washington Flyer bus shuttle to the West Falls Church Metro station (which is on the Orange Line) and take the Orange Line all the way to the Eastern Market station (also on Orange Line). But if you have a lot of large baggage, this might be cumbersome.

"we know a transfer at eastern market is necessary to get to our rental."
Again, this doesn't make any sense at all. Are you talking about a car rental or an apartment rental? When you say transfer, what do you mean? If your destination is, in fact, Eastern Market, then the information others have provided covers it. As I recall, you are coming for a long trip so you may not want to be tramping around on mass transit to get where you need to go, since it isn't really that efficient. A taxi--although very pricey--is the best bet. Plan on about $70 if you are headed towards Eastern Market. |
This is one of those requests where a little more information could allow people to be much more helpful.
Where do you need to go, not where you need to transfer? Are you going to the rental itself or to the rental office? How much baggage will you have and how large are the individual pieces? I ask this because our British friends arrive with suitcases the size of steamer trunks and Americans are obsessed with traveling for a month with only a carryon. |
we've rented an apartment and we're awaiting the exact address. my hard drive died, i had no back up, so address was lost. to reach the apartment, we get off at the eastern market stop (not transfer) and walk to our apartment.
we each carry a small suitcase and a back pack. we can manage on the metro. |
Least expensive way would be to the take the 5A bus from Dulles and get off at the Rosslyn Metro Station. From there take the Orange line metro toward New Carrollton and get off at Eastern Market Metro stop.
U can look at all this, get price and times at the DC Metro/Bus site http://www.wmata.com/rider_tools/ |
Ahhh...<i>we get off at the eastern market stop (not transfer) and walk to our apartment.</i>
NOW it makes sense... This is what you want (from http://www.metwashairports.com/dulle...tion/metrorail ): Purchase a ticket ($10 one-way or $18 round-trip) at the Washington Flyer Coach ticket counter located at Arrivals Door #4 in the Main Terminal. Travelers will also board the Coach from this location. The buses depart approximately every 30 minutes but please listen for announcements for exact bus departure times. You may purchase a Metrorail fare card inside the train station at the West Falls Church Metro stop where you will board the train (I would start with $10 per person to keep you getting around your first few days...). Trains bound for "New Carrollton" will take you towards Downtown Washington, DC. Get off at Eastern Market station. Info on the shuttle between IAD and West Falls Church Metro station (Orange line): http://www.washfly.com/flyer_bus_faqs.htm Area map of Eastern Market Metro Station - the "white arrow" is the direction you'll be facing as you come up the escalator(print this and save): http://www.stationmasters.com/System.../easternm.html Metro map showing route bewteen West Falls Church and Eastern Market: http://www.stationmasters.com/System...ystem_map.html |
and don't forget to stand on the right on the Metro escalators. The left side is for walking

Now it makes perfect sense. Bardo's advice is the best.
|
Bardo's suggestion is fine -- just costs more than the 5A
bus to Rosslyn and then the metro to Eastern Mkt. The latter route will cost a total of between $4 & $5. Bardo's route might be a touch quicker since u r on the metro longer and less time on the roads. U get the 5A bus on the bottom floor of IAD and walk to the left when u exit. The bus is $3.10 and u pay on the bus with exact change. U buy your metro ticket at the Rosslyn metro station. In additon to taking the the Orange line to Eastern Market, u could also take the blue line metro (towards Largo, MD) to Eastern Market. Enjoy DC. |
