DTW to/from Comercia Park night game
 

I need advice on getting from the Detroit airport to Comercia Park for the Tigers game on Jun 18. I arrive at about 4PM and the game is at 7PM. Have tentative plans to stay at the Westin at the airport (res at $99+).

Apparently, I am not smart enough to figure out the SMART bus website. Would be nice to take a bus both ways. Looks like taxi fare would be about $40 one way.

The airport website mentions rental cars, taxis, and smart buses. Besides limo services are there other options?

I would skip the Smart Bus route. Detroit is not a public transportation city.

Your best bet is to either rent a car...consider the parking fee of $20 (approx) to park downtown.

You could take a car. I suggest Metro Cars. It is very popular and dependable and nice.

You won't have to worry about traffic..rush hour that is per se on a Saturday. Just construction...ugh..

Overall, the Metro cars may be a better deal by the time you deal with parking and all.

I agree with tinathetoad. There is no way I'd try to take a bus to and from Comerica Park. Public transportation is not big in the Motor City.

I would also recommend Metro Cars. Very reliable.

Here's a third vote for MetroCars. That's your best bet.

Looks like the Westin won't be any better than a nearby hotel. I'll be on United and arriving Smith terminal while the Westin is at McNamara terminal.

I started looking at downtown hotels and found the Crowne Plaza at 1024 Washington. What is the area like around there? I saw a reference to casinos. Do they have blackjack?

Suppose I could take the People Mover from the Michigan Ave stop to Grand Circus to save a little time getting to the game. Looks like the PM makes a loop in the city. Does the PM go in both directions, clockwise and ccw? The difference would be 11 stops instead of two from Mich. Ave. to Grand Circus.

I will have to use Metro Cars or a taxi to get back to the airport. I figured out the bus situation and the Sunday morning schedule starts after my flight departure time. My option for the inbound trip is bus #125. My flight arrives two minutes after the 4:10PM bus and next bus is at 5PM.

I could get off at Cass & Lafayette at 6:20, go around the corner to check in, then go to the game via the People Mover from Michigan Avenue (or taxi). Other option is to go straight to the game by taking the bus to Mich. Ave (6:22PM) and then the PM to Grand Circus.

Try the new Hilton Garden Inn in Downtown Detroit. Their website says they are one block from Comerica Park - this would make your life a lot easier. Take a Metro Car to and from the airport and walk to the park.

Thanks, but the HGI is over my budget. I read at the MGM Grand webpage that the People Mover does travel on a one-way loop. Based on the map at the PM site, it looks to me like it goes counter-clockwise. I can walk from the Crowne Plaza as it looks like it is only a half mile.

I would not depend on the people mover...it is not always running, and sometimes it is not safe...just depends.

Yes, the casinos have blackjack. I would stick with your original plan.

The Metro Cars will take you about 20 minutes...tops...the bus would have been about 90 minutes I bet...

It's going to be the airport Marriott ($55 on priceline) and an Alamo full size car ($15 on pl).

Any advice on parking? Will be going to the game and then to a casino, though I don't know which one.

Parking is in several different lots throughout downtown. When I went to a game at Ford Field a couple of years back (can't believe it has been that long) we parked about 2 blocks away behind the State theater, and it cost about 15 bucks. Not sure where MGM is located at, but I know that Greek Town is right down there near Comerica Park.
