We have tickets to the play The Drowsy Chaperone.....good choice or not for a couple with a 16 year old son? We were told it is quite funny!

It's a fun show. Whether or not a 16 year-old will like it is anyone's guess. This doesn't have the same draw for older teenagers that Wicked has for girls. If your son likes musical theater, then he'll like this. It is really a celebration of musical theater and a delightful and entertaining show. But it doesn't have the same big-ticket appeal as Phantom or Les Miz.

Since you already have the tickets, maybe get your hands on the music - as said, if your son loves theater and musicals, he will enjoy it - if he would be more enthralled with an over the top, special effects type a la Miss Saigon/Les Miz/Wicked then he may find it less exciting. Hearing the music might give him some sense of recognition and interest prior to attending.

Personally, I thought it was fun and light and gerat if you had a frame of reference for musicals in general

We loved this show when we saw it in March! My twin sons (21 at the time) really enjoyed it a lot. It's very clever and funny. At the end of the evening my face hurt, and I realized it was because I had been smiling almost non-stop throughout the performance.

This was on my list of "possiblities" when planning our NYC trip. I just couldn't get anyone in the family excited about it. Right after I broke down and bought Mary Poppins tickets, DH talked to a lady who had just seen Drowsy Chaperone and she said it was so funny, they laughed the whole time. Of course, THEN he wished we were seeing it, but we had already used up our evenings.

Drowsy Chaperone was a great show. As said, it is very clever and witty. Don't recall having seen many teens at the show. Good luck, enjoy.

Thanks for your comments. We are attending the play whether our 16 year enjoys it or not! WE (Dad and Mom) love musicals, so it is a GO! Our son has seen some plays and loves oldies music, so he should be able to survive 1 hour and 40 minutes! I really wanted to see Jersy Boys, but a bit costly! My son said we just HAD to see a Broadway play...I informed him I already have and some day he can buy his own ticket and then he will see one too! Just love teens!! Actually we have seen many of the on Broadway plays, so this will be fine. We may still try to see The Color Purple, but do not think we will extra time on our hands with all we plan to see in and do in 5 days in NYC. Thanks again!

Have y'all seen Rent? My 16 year old son is obsessed with it right now. We didn't see it because I didn't think it was appropriate for our 11 year old, but I think it's pretty easy to get discount tickets.

Missypie, Rent is a great show. Different, of course, than the "typical" musical - loud and raucous in some parts, but great none the less.

Perhaps, as you believe, not the best choice for an 11 year old, but might also depend on the maturity level of that particular "child."

Perhaps consider the MPAA rating on the movie and judge from there. It does contain some language, but nothing "over the top" and while there is some sexual content suggested, there's nothing overly blatant.

We Netflixed the movie a couple of months ago and DD11 fell asleep early on; I thought that was for the best. I figure NEXT TIME we're in New York (whenever that may be), all the kids will be old enough so that we can see just about anything. (Because she's the youngest of three, DD11 sees a lot more PG13-type stuff than her siblings did at her age. Her older sister reminds me of that a lot.)

Drowsy Chaperone is harmless fun . . . I think a 16 year old boy will enjoy it he likes theater & appreciates an "inside joke" about Broadway.

FWIW, Momburd, if you didn't like Rent, I would not recommend Spring Awakening either. Similar in a few aspects, and definitely contains some "dark", if not minorly disturbing, subject matter - along with much stronger sexual content.

I really liked the Drowsy Chaperone - but I'm wondering if a 16 year old will "get it"?

Though, my husband liked it and his sense of humour seems to be stuck at around 14.
