Oops - my previous post should have been addressed to lenleigh. (sal615 - IF you are also used to mountainside driving,, go for it - if not try to arrange your trip so you drive north up the coast)

Pikes Peak is a drive that you take slow all the way up and especially on the way down. One reason would be for safety and one for scenery as it has some good views of the mountains, it is what inspired "purple mountains magesty". I'm going to assume off others comments that the CA coast is not quite as bad. For those that have driven it from San Fran to San Diego or even to LA, about how long did it take you? Where in relation to the drive is Hearst Castle?

Hwy 1 though Big Sur is NOTHING compared to the white-knuckle drive up Pikes Peak! If you've done that drive, you'll have no problem on Hwy 1 - LOL.
