Driving trip Texas-N.Carolina-Texas
 

My husband and I are planning a driving trip from Texas to North Carolina and back, hoping to catch autumn colors. Thinking last two weeks in October. Is this a good time? Also, would appreciate suggestions of driving routes, stop-offs for views, fall foliage, etc. Thanks for your input.

Route sort of depends on where you are starting in Texas and how you feel about non-interstate highways.

I have ideas, but some of them might be a waste without this information.

Ackislander, we start in northeast Texas near Shreveport La. We will need interstate highways a lot of the way but can take some non-interstate highways to see specific sights.

I would head to Chattanooga, then over to eastern TN/ western NC, definitely go to Asheville and then other places in NC depending on your interests. I'd head back through the NE corner of Georgia - Dillard, Clayton, etc. and back through Atlanta to Birmingham, etc. That will be a busy time and I'd make reservations ahead of time, in particular for weekends. If you give an idea of what you are interested in seeing (and what you may have already seen) and how many miles you are willing to drive, we can help with details.

The loop described above is 1600 miles and 24 hours of driving. That's 3 days of "serious" driving.

Starr's and I think a lot of the same things about this part of the world.

I endorse her trip. If you have the time, you can cut right across North Mississippi (Oxford, Tupelo) into north Alabama (Florence, Muscle Shoals) then after Chattanooga, to the Smokies east of Knoxville.
