Driving to Port Canaveral from Vero Beach

We are driving from Vero Beach to Port Canaveral. We will be staying at the Disney resort on A1A. Is it better to drive up all the way on A1A or go to I 95?

I'd stay on A1A, especially since you're right there at the Disney resort.

Otherwise, you have to take the Wabasso bridge and drive west several miles to get to 95, and then drive back east on 528 to get to PC. Another choice might be to go over the Wabasso and take Route 1.

Honestly, there's no great way to go, but A1A isn't bad and is almost direct to PC.

Slow going on A1A and watch your speed. It can take 30 minutes on a good day to get from Patrick AFB to the port. Much longer if there is beach traffic. If you want to meander along then take it. It is scenic.

The heavier beach traffic, usually on weekends, is mostly going south, though it might affect you somewhat in the Cocoa Beach area. And if you're making the trip anytime soon, you'll benefit from the decrease in snowbird traffic.

Cocoa Beach all depends on how many ships are coming in and out. That bogs us down bad. The parking lots in Cape Canaveral are busy. Many people take advantage of them for cheaper parking. Just be patient and you will be ok but there are a lot of red lights.

A1A is a road which has a lot of names depending on where it is. Down here in Broward County, some people actually refer to it as "Florida's Parking Lot" but I would have to agree that anything would be more "scenic" than I-95 so why not?

BTW, and not that this is the final word, Mapquest and Google Maps list A1A and I-95 as taking just about same amount of time. The I-95 route is about 25 miles longer.

Thanks everyone. This cruise is not until April 25, so like someone said, the spring breakers will be gone and many snowbirds too. So A1A it is. (I'm sick of 95 anyway!)

You could also take US-1 which hugs the intercoastal waterway. Might be a little faster than A1A.

Not according to Mapquest and Google Maps. It lists Route 1 as the longest route time-wise, when compared with A1A and 95.

Dukey1 Apr 12th, 2016 09:23 AM

Since BOTH rte 1 and A1A have intersections, traffic lights, and a lot of people turning off and into it is not surpriskng that using a INTERSTATE might be faster overall.

But it's not, according the websites. I-95 and A1A work out to be about the same for the route the OP describes. I imagine time of day and even time of year affect that, but all things being equal, they're equal.

I'm the OP. Time isn't really a factor. A1A will just be a different route for my family to see. Thanks all.
