Driving To Florida From CT

I am driving from CT to Florida for my honeymoon next week. Anybody have any tips for me in terms of good places to stop? Or places to avoid? I'm going to AAA later to totally avoid the tunnel in DC (Chesapeake Bay). Would love advice from other travelers! Thanks!!

Sorry but the Chesapeake bay Tunnel is not in DC. It actually connects the eastern peninsula of Maryland and Virginia with Virginia Beach and surrounds.

If you want to get around DC and stay away from 95 then when you're heading south sat Baltimore take I-97 toward Annapolis - then I-97 intersects with Rt 50 and Rt 301- Take that west for a couple miles and then south on Rt 301. Cross the bridge into Virginia and then take Rt 207 over to I-95 which is far below the Maryland, DC, and Virginia interchange problems. This route works well - gets a little slow at times in Waldorf but is much, much better than stopping and waiting for a couple hours (and that happens frequently on I-95 and I-395 in Springfield VA.

Hope I'm not to late - but check into Amtrak's auto train from DC (actually Lorton, VA) to Sanford, FL (not far from Orlando). We did it with our kids last summer as part of a trip to Rhode Island and had a great time. It's not cheap, though - especially if you get cabin, which I STRONGLY recommend. Also, you have bunks - maybe not the best on a honeymoon, but my husband and I slept (closely) on the lower one and did fine. You get to the station between noon and 2, they load the cars, you board at 3, and leave at 4. There's a nice club car where we had drinks and nibbles after leaving - lots of people hung out and played cards or visited. Dinner was surprising good, then we went back to our room to read. There's breakfast in the morning, and you get to Sanford about 9. Unloading was slow in Florida, but I think we were on our way by 10:30 at the very latest. It's a fun, relaxed way to travel. The worst part was getting from the CT/NY line to Lorton!
