Driving time-SF to Carmel/Monterey?

I am getting mixed messages from different people on how long it takes to drive from SF to Monterey/Carmel area. We are thinking of taking a day trip and renting a car. Yahoo Maps says 2 hours. I am now hearing 3 or 4 hours?
What is it folks??? Thanks.

It's about 120 miles. A little long for a day trip.

Go for it. We did it all in one day and loved it. No more than 2 hrs. getting there.

How long depends on which route and how fast you drive. It usually takes me just under 2 hours to get to Carmel from my home in SF (during non rush hour times) taking 280 to 85 to 17 to 1 or 280, 85, 101, 156 and 1. I'm used to the drive, I'm not admiring the scenery or looking for unfamiliar exits and I speed!!! Taking 1 the entire way is slower but no route is 4 hours unless you go through San Jose at rush hour. Visiting the Monterey Penninsula is a doable day trip if you have a specific activity in mind such as visiting the Acquarium, but it is much better as an overnight trip.

If you take Hwy 1 all the way down, which is a nice drive, it will be closer to 3 hours, or if you travel during commute time it could take that long too. Normally, 2 hours should do it.

Thanks I think we will try and make the trip. Taking 1 the scenic route there and the faster route home! Thanks.
