Driving through the fires
 

We leave tomorrow, driving from East Tenn. to Orlando. We decided not to take the convertible and back roads due to the fires and other things. So we'll be hitting the interstates and zipping on down.

The quickest way for us is I-26/I-95/I-4. But we can also scoot over and take I-75 if necessary.

I've been watching highway conditions and both 95 and 75 have been closed at times due to the fires. Looks like fire is closest to I-95 in Ga., but parts of I-75 in Florida are affected.

So understanding that conditions can change in a matter of minutes, my question is, which highway will be least likely to close due to fire tomorrow?

And, if the Interstate is closed, are the surrounding US or local highways also closed?

A live operator will answer and will give you information on road conditions and answer questions.

I use it all the time when I'm stuck in traffic. It helps me figure out if I should just sit still for a while (which I HATE!) or get off the xway for a detour.

PS - Re your question about local roads also closed - I don't think so, if the problem is just smoke. I think they shut down the interstates because of high speeds + low/ no visibility = danger. Call *DOT to ask if you encounter a problem.

I am just outside of Orlando, north, and it is very hazy and smokey today. It is supposed to be that way this weekend, they think. Impossible to tell if more fires will pop up but we did have a heavy rain last night. Not enough to solve our dryness but a help.

Thanks again, starrsville. Never would have thought to call the DOT, but I would try to look up the webpage on hubby's Blackberry (which I'm sure would be an exercise in futility).
