Driving through SLC south to north

We will be driving from Moab back to the Pacific North west. Looking at the highway goingthrough SLC it looks like a nightmare of freeways. Any thoughts on the route going back to LV or going north through Idaho?

Just answered on your other thread. If you ever wanted to see eastern Oregon at its best, take I-80 west from SLC to Winnemucca, NV and take US 95 all the way to Burns and then US 20 west through Bend to get to your destination.

Tom--that's a lot of flat sagebrush--such a loooooong stretch :-) I would take I-15 just to see the mountains. Although if the final destination is the Pacific NW, you gotta go through eastern Oregon at some point. Makes getting to the wet side of the mountains even more amazing!!

Last time we went to SLC to go to Moab we took the Coast Starlight to Sacramento and the CA Zephyr to SLC and rented a car there. Rolling through the Nevada desert in the dark beats driving through it in the daylight.
Depending on your destination, probably I-84 to I-205 is your best bet.
Weekends are not bad for I-15 construction south of SLC to Spanish Fork.
In Green River, the John Wesley Powell Museum is worth seeing.
It is right next to the river bridge (NE side).
We stayed at he Robbers Roost Motel which was not fancy but adequate at a fair price.

Actually if you are heading north (or South) it is very easy to navigate through town. I-15 is a straight shot north without any tricky parts. Just stay in the left lanes so you don't accidentally head to I-215 or I-80 - though those exits are very well marked and shouldn't give you any problems.

And try to avoid hitting downtown SLC after about 3:30 pm or you'll have heavy traffic all the way to Ogden.
