Driving through maineto Quebec
 

Hi We are planning a trip from Boston through maine to Quebec but living in WALES UK I am not sure of the best route or where to stop we are staying in Boston for 4 nights then intend to go North towards Arcadia but from there what is the most interesting route? any suggestions?

FYI- you might want to repost. I thought this was about a town in Quebec called "Maineto". Not that there IS such a place...

I live outside of Boston and like to take I-95 to the Maine turnpike, then Rte. 206 from Waterville through Jackman, then following the Riviere Chaudiere after crossing into Quebec. This route is very scenic and remote (and will feel especially so for someone from the UK) and for much of its length follows the route taken by Benedict Arnold in his ill-fated expedition to capture Quebec during the American revolution. Among other sources, you can read about the Arnold expedition in Kenneth Roberts' historical novel Arundel.

Go thru Greenville at the foot of Moosehead Lake. Take a trip on the Katadin (boat). Stay at Indian Hill Motel with a great view of the lake. Ask about where you might go to see a moose and bears. (My Welsh ancestors settled there)

Liz, if everybody reposted their messages to make them understood by people so stupid they thought this was about a town called maineto, there wouldn't be any room left here.

Were you planning on going to Montreal or Quebec City?

I grew up in Maine. First off, if you plan to go to Acadia National Park, then you have gone a long way from a shorter route to Quebec City. Anyhow, the directions are I-95 in Maine to Waterville and then take exit 36, Route 201 north and a sign will designate Quebec City. The route is 201 vice 206 which another post gave you. Once on 201 you will drive 18 miles to Skowhegan, another 25 to Bingham, 18 more to Caratunk, another 7 to The Forks, and about 35 more to Jackman, Maine. You cross the bridge from Jackman to Moose River Maine and in about another 45 minutes you will cross the border into Canada. Quebec City may be 4 hours from this point (just a guess) but you can easily drive from Waterville to Quebec in one day. Old Quebec City is fascinating and meals/drinks can be expensive. Lodging is within reason. Prices are in Canadian dollars but use a credit card for all purchases and the price will be converted to American dollars which is cheaper. If you convery money, you will loose money. Just take a limited amount of Canadian dollars. As for Arcadia, its in a different direction but well worth the drive on route 1 but very slow/busy in the summer season. Getting from that area would require you to go to Bangor and then to Waterville to get onto route 201. Or with a good roadmap, cutting across secondary roads. Good Luck

I have a question I am not very good on directions.. but my mother lives in BAngor and I was wondering if you could give me directions to Quebec from Bangor. I am going to spend some time there this fall and I think Mom would love a trip to Quebec. I have a question " do you know if Quebec is dog friendly ?"

mrsbu - There's only one main route from Central Maine to Quebec City, that's US201. From Bangor, you can take I-95 South to Exit 39 (Newport), then US2 west to Skewhegan, and then US201 all the way into Canada.

US201 turns into Hwy 173 in Quebec, and then Autoroute 73 all the way into Quebec City.

Just curious, pll8on, but how did you come upon this post and why did you post an answer to a question posed 2 years ago? I imagine Robin Powell is back in Wales now. While I found the answers here interesting, I'm always amazed at how these old posts get revived as if time stood still.

pll8on, their credit card purchases in Canada will not be converted into American dollars. They are from the UK so their credit card purchases will be (were) converted from Canadian dollars into British pounds !
