Driving the West Maui circle?

I've seen an article about Maui that suggests driving a circle around west Maui as alternative to the road to Hana only quicker and with less traffic. Has anyone attempted this drive? My questions - how bad does the road get in the north section?, does this actually violate rental car agreements?, how is the traffic and scenery, especially as compared to the road to Hana?
The nortwestern drive is indeed worth it, and it only takes two to three hours depending on how often you stop.

I enjoyed it more than the road to Hana, although it does not get as much publicity. The problem is not that the raod is in bad shape. It is paved. The problem is that it is VERY narrow in places where it is only one lane. It is not for the faint of heart because if you meet another car you might have to back up on these narrow roads on the edges of cliffs. There is little traffic. The scenery is great. Car rental agreements are violated only on unpaved roads. Don't do it if you are a nervous driver.

We traveled this road as well as the road to Hana. Like the previous poster said, it is not for the faint of heart. It is extremely narrow, and we did indeed meet another car and had to back up. My husband is not at all a nervous driver but was scared to death of doing that. However, it was worth the trip. The scenery is absolutely the best on Maui, hands down. We managed to stop at a road-side stand and buy some homemade banana bread (still warm!) and homemade coconut candy. Our car rental contract did say that we were in violation if we traveled the road, but we ignored it. My husband and I now refer to that road as the “illegal road”. Do it, you won’t regret it!

We drove this road for the first time three weeks ago.It was memorable.
The scenery was amazing, but that road is narrow!!!I've been on some scary roads in my life but this one got me real nervous(maybe I'm getting old).
Read "Maui Revealed" for some great info on this trip. And check out this web site for some great pictures of the road.
http://www.virtualguidebooks.com/Haw...urchRedux.html
