Driving route from Annaheim to Pismo

In September my family and I will be coming from Australia and driving from Annaheim to Pismo beach in 1 day. Iíve been looking at google maps and reading some comments here but Iím really confused as to the best route to take.

After doing some reading, Iíd like to go via Santa Monica, Oxnard, Santa Barbara and Solvang. We will have already been in LA, so can avoid that area.

Any help appreciated
Karen

405 then 101. Loose one of the "n"s in Anaheim.

You can't really avoid it -- you will have to drive the full length of the LA Basin. Stu's route is really the only practical option.

Actually, from Anaheim it will be several miles out of your way to hop the 405 (notice that in southern CA we call freeways "the xxx" instead of "Interstate xxx or US-xxx"). The most direct route is to hop the 5 north toward downtown LA, then grab the 101 north to the Central Coast. You won't avoid traffic any way you go, so make an early day of it.

In re-reading the OP's query, I see that you want to go through Santa Monica. BAD IDEA and a bit unnecessary. Make Santa Monica another day trip from Anaheim (there are multiple ways to get there, including several that don't require getting over to the 405). The best thing for you IMHO is the 5-101 route, which bypasses the congested Westside of LA completely.

If you want to explore the touristy bits of the LA metro area, those should be self-contained day trips from Anaheim. The area is just too vast by itself to try and squeeze in too much. Believe me-- I've been here 33 years and am still discovering new things in southern CA, let alone the Central Coast or the northern part of this huge, glorious state.

Ok, thanks, I’ll skip Santa Monica.
I’ll be leaving on a weekday, and was thinking a 9am start would be ok, is this early enough?

The traffic will be awful from about 7AM (earlier actually) to 9:30-ish. Leave REALLY early AM or wait til mid morning.

Have you considered a stop at Solvang? It is a Danish style villaege north of Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara would be a nice stop too.

Yes, Solvang is definitely on my list.
I’m thinking a lunch stop at Santa Barbara would be a good idea, any recommendations for healthy, organic cafes?

Thanks, actually, after reading about The Bear and Star in Los Olivos, I think I may try there.
