Driving route: Burbank to Santa Barbara?

We arrive Sunday in Burbank at 11, and we can't check into our Santa Barbara hotel until 4. I'm wondering if it would be better to drive on the 101 (the easy way) and get to Santa Barbara sooner, or to take US 1 down through Malibu and enjoy the scenic drive? My only fear about taking US 1 is getting stuck behind a line of 50 cars because one is going really slow...

If you take 101 you will see some great ocean views from Oxnard on up.The view on highway 1 from Santa Monica on up is somewhat obscured by houses built close together and on weekends the drive can be slow. I would take 101.

IF you weren't coming from Burbank I'd recommend PCH but that is way out of the way. From the LA Santa Monica area it is actually a shorter drive than the 101 and a lot more scenic.
What you could do if you wanted a leisure scenic drive is take the 126 that drops you off in Ventura but it's a little longer.
If it were me? I'd want to get to Santa Barbara as early as possible. There's always the possibility the hotel will allow early check in and even if they don't it would be very easy for me to occupy my time.

You could also stop by Ojai on your way up to SB as someone else suggested. It's a very lovely town. Once you reach Ventura via 10I, take highway 33 and you'll be there in 20 minutes. If you do go, make sure to stop by Ojai Valley Inn at least for a drink. You won't be sorry.

Ojai is a lovely town or you could also stop in Ventura which has wonderful eating establishments, interesting shops etc. Here is the official website.

You will be visiting a beautiful area, lucky you!
