Driving Port Huron to Chicago

What is the best (quickest, most direct) route? I'm thinking I-69 to 94? Leaving Sunday at 7:00 am. Where would be good places to stop for breaks and lunch? Also don't have any Chicago city maps or Illinois maps at all. Is there an Illinois welcome center somewhere along the way? I should have ordered them online but too late now.
Thnaks,
Lolly

Yes, I-69 to I-94. The actual way into Chicago depends on where in Chicago you're going and whether there's construction going on. I'll let the locals advise you.

There's no IL welcome center coming in from IN. But if you're taking I-80/294 Tri-State Tollway, then there may be tourist information at the service area just west of the junction of I-94.

Thank you. We are staying on East Grand Avenue. Kinda worried because 2 million people are expected at the Lakefront to see an air show when we will be arriving!

You will most likely encounter traffic due to the air show. If you have time, you can generally buy good maps at any local Barnes and Noble or Borders book store. If you don't have time, go to some place like mapquest.com or maps.google.com and print off maps of downtown Chicago.

Generally I've seen recommended here (and have used it myself) the route of taking the Skyway from Indiana, then exiting at Stoney Island and taking that past the Museum of Science and Industry to Lake Shore Drive.

BUT I don't know if there are road closures due to the Air Show, or if Lake Shore Drive might be more congested than usual due to the show. Not sure if you'll have time to get any more info before you leave, but maybe someone else can chime in with best directions given the air show.

But, keep in mind that you will get to where you're going. Worst case - the air show will add time to your commute. It won't keep you from Chicago completely. :) And most visitors to the air show don't drive there, so that's a good thing! :-D

Thanks, I'll let you know how it goes. Just leaving.

Hi,
We made it! Traffic wasn't too bad. Took the Chicago Skyway. Have had fun here so far. Bought the transit pass - $12 for 3 days of unlimited bus and subway rides. We are a bit clueless as to where we are going but the people here are helpful and friendly.
