Driving on Maui at night.
 

This is a repeat post, because I think I posted it in the wrong place. Sorry if it appears twice.

My friend and I want to go to the Warren and Annabelle Magic Show in Lahaina, but are quite nervous about driving back to The Four Seasons in the dark. Is the drive hilly and curvy? Is it safe? Would we be better off to take a taxi? We don't mind the expense.

If we go to Lahaina in the morning and spend the day before going to dinner and the show, what should we do and see there?

There is a self-guided historic walking tour that is fun to do in Lahaina (you get a map from the visitors center and follow it around). I liked having breakfast or lunch on the veranda at Pioneer Inn. Aloha Mixed Plate is a great outdoor restaurant serving island food at reasonable prices (near Cannery Mall).

Sometimes there's artists displaying work under the huge banyon tree in the middle of town.

Mostly in Lahaina there are lots of shops, galleries, bars, restaurants (a bit "honky tonk" I call it).

Sorry don't know about driving as we stayed right in Lahaina.

It's a two lane road and not too curvy or windy except in a few spots. But if I remember correctly the speed limit is about 45 mph. Unless you are a REALLY nervous driver you should be fine.

Coming from a city, the biggest difference for me was the absence of streetlights. It's a well-maintained highway w/ LOTS of tourist traffic.

Easy & pleasant drive. Be aware the local cops take DWI/DUI seriously.

The drive is safe. However, if you suffer from vertigo, it might be daunting in places. Highway 30, the route into and out of Lahaina, rises (and falls) substantially, though not suddenly, with dramatic elevated views around McGregor Point, mile marker 9 and the Lahaina Tunnel. Beautiful stretch to drive.

I've driven it back to Kihei at night after W&A and the Feast at Lele, once in November and once in February not daunting at all.

No problem spending all day in Lahaina - lots to do. You could go on up to Whaler's Village in the A.M. shop there then spend the rest of the day in Lahaina. It all depends on your interests. If you are interested in history be sure to visit the Old Court House and the Bailey House Museum, you may want to cross the highway and drive up to Lahainaluna the first high school west of the Rockies. Great views from there, too.

You've gotten some good ideas for Lahaina. As far as the driving, my view is that it's pretty easy drive. We made that drive several times back to the FS and had no problems at all.

The only bad experience I have had on Maui roads at night was in extreme heavy rain. There was red mud flowing over the roads. This was an extremely heavy rain storm though. In normal conditions you should be totally fine.

I drove it at night with no problems...in fact I may have been better off with the darkness because I could see less of the cliffs!
