Driving North from Baltimore tomorrow, 12/28
 

My brother is planning to drive from Baltimore to New City, NY on 12/28. The roads down here are fine. What should he expect along the way for tomorrow as he gets further north?

The more north you get, the better the snow removal will be - even though they got more snow. I do think he should expect a lot of traffic - no one is going went anywhere Sun or is going anywhere today - so they will all be on the road Tuesday.

I would suggest he stay on the western more route - do not under any circumstances follow a routing that takes him over the George Washington Bridge and then back over the River (which is the way some GPS will send him)- look on a map and this will make sense - I might pick Rte 287 even though it might add a few miles.

Major roads will be clear - most of them are already. Not sure about New City - they should contact whoever they will be visiting to find out about room for parkng a car (someone will have to dig out a place for them to put it - or they need to bring their own shovel.

NYT, thanks for the concern. My brother lives in New City but was unable to contact any neighbors until about 10 minutes ago and his street is passable. He contracts with a reliable guy to clean his driveway when it snows, so we hope the fellow came through.

I was amazed to learn that the visiting nurse made it to my mom's place in Queens this AM since her neighborhood is rarely cleared.

The streets in Manhattan are still terrible. Look at any website. While I understand he's not going there, I can't imagine suburban streets will be in better condition than Manhattan. I personally would wait another day if he can.

www.trafficland.com/ is a site where you can click on the states and get the department of transportation which has current conditions and/or traffic cameras etc for all the roads along the way.

Suburban counties typically do a much better job of cleaning the streets than NYC. My parents in Nassau lived on a street one block long and they were always cleared very promptly. Main road woud be almost dry - then you would hit Queens and the mess would start.

Agree this storm is worse - don;t know if it's the 40 laid off Sanit men - or the high winds that forced multiple plowings of the major streets. My side street (upper west side) is a real mess - and it's been well cleaned in every other storm - even when we had 30" several years ago.

Well, he left this am after looking at the turnpike traffic cams. Let's see how long it takes him to get home. BTW NYT, New City is in Rockland County on the Jersey side of the river.

Thank you all for your input and insights. Big Bro made it home to New City from Columbia, MD in about 6 hours including a stop for lunch. Roads were clear all of the way and traffic was moderate except for a couple of slow downs in the usual places. Best part was coming home to a driveway cleared down to the blacktop. They are going to have to give their snow clearing guy an extra tip.
