Driving Los Angeles to Grand Canyon

Am thinking of driving this trip after arriving on international flight with 4 kids ranging 10 to 15 and would love suggestions on where to break the trip. We are hoping to spend 2 -3 nights in GC and then overnight in LV on our way to Yosemite so I'm lookng to a different option to LV for this night.

Many thanks

Cathycon

If you are going in winter, stop at Death Valley. If it is summer, there are places not far from Hoover Dam, do the dam tour, look for places like Boulder City, or go down to Kingman after a tour. Or take i 40 from Barstow and stop in Bullhead City or Laughlin. If you decide on Laughlin, there are great petroglyphs in Grapevine canyon, a couple of miles west of town off route 163.

I admit I'm a little confused. Are you asking about the route to take between LA and GC? Or have you already decided upon a route and want to know where to spend a night, so you don't drive non-stop between these two? Or are you asking about a place to stay between GC and Vegas?

If (1), the I recommend I-10 east from LA, then State Hiway 95 (note difference with US Hiway 95) north from Quartzite, into Lake Havasu City, then east on I-40 to Flagstaff, then north to the GC. I think this route has more places to break up a trip than I-15 to I-40 to Flagstaff.

I prefer the I-10 east to I-89 north route through Prescott, Jerome and Sedona AZ.

The mountain views in Jerome are outstanding and Jerome is quite interesting. It used to be an abandoned ghost town but is now an artist colony. The Jerome Grand Hotel is pretty impressive. It's on top of the mountain and is supposedly haunted.

Note I hope you are spending at least a day or two in LA after your international flight. It is a long drive (8-10 hours depending on the route).

I also recommend spending a day or two or three before you embark on such a long drive.

It is around 500 miles or 800 KM.

To PaulRabe, RBCal and GoTravel - thank you for your suggestions and sorry for not acknowledging them sooner - I've been out of 'computer' circulation!
Yes I was asking about route between LA and GC so am checking out your ideas. We are going to take just 1 night in LA before we head to GC because we are doing a circle ( LA to GC, then to LV, Yosemite, SF and back down to LA) and plan on spending a few nights in LA at that stage.

Any more tips would be gratefully accepted

Hello TonyKeogh - unfortunately our trip had to be postponed until 2012 so I am just now restarting the whole research. I will be probably looking to YOU for advice at this stage!

Hi Cathycon... My husband and I intend doing the exact route as you have planned for JULY 2012 for about 10 days but will fly to Las Vegas or Flaggstaff first and continue to GRand Canyon and then Yosemite/ SF/ LA.. Please let me know how your plans are going and if you have finalised any routes.
