Driving LA to SF, where to stay 1 night in between?

We usually stop at San Luis Obispo, especially if it is Thursday, so that we can hit the Farmers Market, which we LOVE. But that is not the case this year. Probably will be a Sat, Sun, or MOn. But we don't want to push the whole way. Thought it would be fun to stop some place in between that is new to us.

We have seen Hearst Castle and Cambria. Don't want to go as far as Monterey. We want to drive up to Big Sur the next day and take our time sight seeing. Santa Barbara would be too early to stop. So, somewhere mid pointish that would be a little different. Will have two teens with us. Any ideas travel experts? Thanks in advance.

Pismo Beach might be a good choice. Not quite as far as SLO but further than Santa Barbara. There's always Solvang but other than really good pastries there really isn't much there to me. Morro Bay is yet another option but I like Cambria better myself.

We live in Northern California and have family in Southern California so when we make the "trek" for Thanksgiving and Christmas we always stop "mid-way." Pismo Beach is one of our favorite stops.

Is there any particular place in Pismo that you like to stay? Is there many hotels on the beach there? Thanks.

The next time I'm in Pismo Beach I'm going to stay at Kon Tiki Inn--an older property with views of the ocean (and a very good restaurant next door). I've stayed at Cottage Inn By the Sea which has nice rooms but no views.

Two other places you might want to try are the Sea Venture and the Sandcastle. They're both right on the beach. My friend stayed at the Kon Tiki and liked it.

We've stayed at the Cottage Inn many times and love the HUGE rooms. No ocean view but easy walk to the great beach there.

Thanks all. We are looking into these hotels. Pismo has quite a nice website. Of course, non of you mentioned the Madonna Inn. Why is that?

How about food? Any good recs for dinner that night? In Pismo or surrounding area? Thanks.
