Driving Key West to Ft. Lauderdale???

Is it reasonable to expect this drive to be 4-5 hours on Super Bowl Sunday, leaving in the morning??

I have a cruiseship to catch, by 3pm, add to the time- car rental return.

I would schedule 5 hours as it's normally close to 4 hours without the Super Bowl. All FLL rental cars are off site, so you also have bus ride to the terminal, 30 minutes minimum, maybe 45.

If you are familiar with this route, you accept highway closure risk any time you make the trip. You can't leave early enough to take it out of the equation.

This is the kind of drive that I would be anxious about the whole time I was in Key West. I'm a worrier, and the thought of a traffic holdup because of an accident on that two lane hwy and then holdups because of Super Bowl would drive me crazy. But that's just me. Have a great trip.

stumpworks: Not exactly - major car rental agencies are located at the FLL terminal. There are only a couple smaller ones located off the grounds.

OP - I agree with the 5 hour trip suggestion. You never know what you might run into trying to get through the Keys.

There are spots on the highway in the Keys where a wreck can stop traffic completely until cleared and those spots are not just on the bridges.

The only way I would suggest doing it would be to spend the last night on Key Largo and then drive in early the next morning.

I would leave at 8am and stop for brunch at Southbeach... that way if anything happens you have plenty of time to adjust... also on a clear Sunday morning coming off the keys, you can make the trip way faster than 4 hours... there's a cool vibe on South Beach on Sundays... its worth the stop!
