Driving in Vermont

Hello All

On Oct 15, my husband and I will be driving from Newport, RI up to Woodstock by way of Historical Deerfield in MA. taking 2 days to do so. We had planned on spending the night in Wilmington, VT before heading up Rte 100 to Woodstock.. It now appears that this may not be possible - roads out because of Irene. We don't want to travel on major roads - small towns and beautiful foliage are what we want to see.

Can anyone suggest an alternate route assuming Rte 100 is not ready. And perhaps suggest a place where we might spend the night. I know we're two weeks out, but we should have plan B ready to go. (We're visiting from Melbourne, Australia).

thanks

I'm sitting in a B+B IN Vermont as I type this. You will have little trouble with Rte 100 I assure you.

Goodness - that's GREAT news. Then, do you think OK to stay in Wilmington, as we first planned, and then drive up?

Check http://www.511vt.com/
for latest road conditions before your trip.

And make sure you have a detailed road map that shows more than just major routes. We use the DeLorme Vermont State Atlas and Gazetteer to plot a trip. It might be too detailed for some people because it shows EVERY road, including seasonal and dirt roads. It's an oversize paperback book available in many stores once you get to the US. Just make sure you get the one for the right state. It also shows the location of covered bridges and waterfalls.
