driving in california

Not that familiar with the area, so I'll put it out there. Would driving from San Diego to Palm Springs using a route that includes ca 78 to ca 86 in early February be allright, or would there be too much chance of running into snow? If anybody has any idea about travel time, that would be appreciated also. It looks like it might be scenic.

The route you describe from SD through Alpine, I-8 exit 40, Julian, Mecca to Palm Springs takes 3.6 hours (182 miles).
It looks like there are a couple of switchbacks on CA 79 between I-8 and Julian. The highest elevation should be near Ocotilla Wells.
Check the weather forecast just before you leave to see if there is any precipitation forecast.

Can you go another route if necessary? You can always go up 15 through Temecula and over 79- or through Hemet up to the 10, or even 15 up to the 10 - but sometimes that gets busy.
