Driving from Taos to Crested Butte - anything to to take in en route?
On our forthcoming trip to New Mexico and Colorado we will be driving from Taos to Crested Butte - with stays of a few days at each.
Is there anything worth doing to break up the drive? We had intended to take the most direct route via US285 but are also open to suggestions.
Thanks

The Cumbres & Toltec Railroad is a great sugestion. You will also be very close to Great Sand Dunes National Park (just northeast of Alamosa).
After leaving the Sand Dunes, get back over to Hwy 285 and head north. The person riding in the passenger seat will have a great view of the Sangre De Cristo Mountains for the next 20+ miles. When you get to Saguache, take Hwy 114 over to Gunnison.

If you take the train, take it one way only [they have buses that will take you back] and pack your own lunch.
There is only 1 place to eat [that the railroad owns] and it is expensive, not good and they ran out of food when we were there! It's a buffet so those on the end of the line didn't get much. {Those were the folks who went into the gift shop first}
It will take the entire day if you do the train both ways. Faster if you bus back.
