Driving from Stowe to Camden, place to stay in between?

We are driving from Stowe VT, to Camden ME. I tis a long drive, looks like 6 hours and the fastest way is going down south, back to Manchester NH and back up to Camden. But I am thinking of going throu8gh the WHite Mountains, and maybe finding a place in between. Half way is Bethel, ME, but haven't found anything too interesting. If anyone has suggestions or maybe a different place to stay that might be better, more romantic that would be very helpful.

Not sure if this would work, but I suggest Portsmouth, NH or Portland, Maine. Not sure if that would be out your way, though.

The 'direct' route on the smaller roads is much nicer. It will take you through some nice mountains and towns. Bethel has some nice inns and B&Bs. Not sure what you're looking for but the Bethel Inn is the largest and probably the nicest. There are also hotels at Sunday River, a large ski resort just north of Bethel on Route 2. Bethel is a nice town, home to Gould Academy, and not too spoiled by tourism. Some nice shops, etc. Smaller than Stowe. The highway routes are long and, IMHO, quite boring.

Bethel is extremely charming. Many would make it a destination.
