Driving from San Francisco to Philadelphia

Hi

I will be driving from SF to Philly with 2 young teenagers who have never driven across country. What is the best route to take for interesting places to see? Have 5 days to drive. Thanks!

Drive all the way on I-80 to Salt Lake City. Long drive but better than staying in the desert. South on I-15/US 191 through Green River to Moab to see Arches NP. From Moab take I-70.
Stop to see the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. Is there anything you want to see in the Denver area?

SF to Philly is 2879 miles so that is 575 miles per day going the fastest route so not a whole lot of time for venturing off the main road and siteseeing!

I like tomfuller's route because you will see the Great Salt Flats, Great Salt Lake and Salt Lake City from your vehicle. I don't think you will have time for Arches so just stay on I-70. I-70 from the Grand Junction to Denver takes you though the Rocky Mountains and is one of the most beautiful sections of interstate driving! You will travel though Vail Colorado!

The only change I'd make to the route would be to stay on I-15 till you reached Scipio, Utah then take a short ride on Hwy 50 to I-70. This will add 75 miles but you can avoid Hwy 191 from Price to Green River which is know for accidents. You will also have the added benefit of traveling almost the whole way on the interstate and traveling though the beautiful San Rafeal Swell area.
